We are looking at a 2007 70' Symbol, cant find much information about the yacht, looking for any advise.
I am a broker who sold a bunch of Symbols back when they were popular. You need to take a close look at this particular boat. Some were poorly built and others OK. Gel coat cracking was a big issue. May have been cured by '07. Sub standard exhaust systems and most hoses windows and port/hatch leaks were common stainless is not very stainless a lot of boat for the money but maintenance will be higher. A surveyor taking a walk through would be good start. Maybe this one has been showered with refinement. There was a motor yacht model with the aft stateroom under the raised aft deck that came down to Palm Beach a few years back. Boat was seedy and sold cheap. New owner poured hundreds of thousands into her after purchase. Find one like that
Thanks for your reply, great info. Is this the boat that you are referencing that is in west palm beach? https://www.**************/boats/2007/symbol-3005574/
It sure looks like the old girl. When I was aboard the boat was in Beaufort SC. It was winter and the engine room was a dripping rain forest. Get Tim the Cat man to look over the mains. The glass work was ok on that boat when I was aboard. Maybe 5 years ago. The saloon being one level from the aft deck to the pilot house was nice and unique.
It had 1100 hours in the winter of 2014 The 1000 hour service was done by the Cat dist in the area Lady Lynn was her name then. Must be the same boat as I think they only built one motor yacht model 70.
Thanks again for all the info. I don’t really understand your comment regarding the engine room, can you clarify? Did they put a lot of money and upgrades into it? What is your overall opinion of the boat at the price it is listed? Is there a crew quarters?
Thanks again for all the info. I don’t really understand your comment regarding the engine room, can you clarify? The engine room and everything inside the engine room was dripping wet from excessive condensation. As a result there was surface rust everywhere. The owner had no clue. A captain picked it up and ran it to Palm Beach Gardens shortly after where the engine room was detailed several months of cosmetic work then she sold. Did they put a lot of money and upgrades into it? I did not follow her after she sold. What is your overall opinion of the boat at the price it is listed? As a consumer looking for a platform like this and comparing her with similar boats available or that have sold I would say mid to high $8xx's would be fair. I am painting with a broad brush here. If she is the same boat that I was familiar with then ended up in Palm Harbor the $850-900. would be fair if she surveys well which thats a 50/50 shot. Find out who surveyed her for the current owners. If they used Tim and the Plitski team snap that boat up tomorrow. Is there a crew quarters? No. too many cabins now PTO's off both Cats and fiberglass fuel tanks
Forgot to ask, what caused the condensation in the engine room and is it an ongoing issue, if we move remain in Florida, where it is like a rain forest, LOL
The condensation was caused by the wild temperature swings in the winter with the ER vents sealed off. Owner problem not a boat problem. The PTO's are hydraulic pumps one for the stabilizers and one for the davit/windlass. The bow and stern thrusters are 24 volt. Only one gen set in 2014. Not sure on the interior. Most people do after they buy a used boat.
I just looked over HMY's listing. She has been for sale for a while. Looks like they started at $1.1 or so. Too high for sure. It is the same boat. They stuffed all those cabins, office and heads on the lower deck and did not leave much space for the master stateroom. That space is small for a 70' boat. Personally I would like a second gen set. 12.5KW. People are funny and I am a prime example. You know what bugs me about the listing? New turbo blankets :-/ nobody replaces blankets you have the exhaust hard coated unless you are saving money for silk saloon pillows. Maybe the service people did not suggest the option. Still a nice package under 900 if she scores high in a good shake out.
I really appreciate all of your input, my broker has a call with HMY today so I am sure I will have a few more questions. We have 6 kids so we need the staterooms. We do a lot of short trips around Florida and the Bahamas. Lots of day trips to spoil islands. We entertain friends and a lot of kids on a regular basis. We are also looking at azimut 70 2011-2012, much more expensive and would be a stretch for us, the value of the symbol is what has us very interested.
Sounds like the Symbol would be a fun platform for your family. As I said before get a very detailed 2 day survey and sample every fluid on board. This will keep you from having expensive surprises down the road. This boat is pretty solid on the depreciation curve. Now its just a matter of keeping her healthy and updated (which is costly enough) but the value should hand in there. Not so on the Azimut IMHO
We are going to see the boat on Friday. Do you know what the boat approx sold for originally? Would you be willing to share your contact info so I can reach out to you directly with any specific questions.
Sure no problem. I have not been aboard the boat since 2015 so I can't help you with her current or recent history or condition. I have more Symbol experience than I care to admit. Happy to look up the last sale price if it was reported. Send me a PM. Understand this is opinion not professional advise. Your broker could pull up the same data. I kept my own boat on the next dock over from the Symbol at Palm Harbor. She looked good from 25 yards If you buy it and enjoy it for 4 years then sell it for near your initial cost you owe me a case of Busch Light. (cans are good) I will check back in 2024.
