OTTAWA -- Canadian and U.S. officials have agreed to keep the border between the two countries closed to non-essential travel until August 21, CTV News has confirmed.

Sources say both governments are on the same page with extending the border restriction measures for another month.

The ban on discretionary travel was first introduced in March and has been extended each month since. The latest extension was set to expire on July 21.

That pretty much puts the nail in the coffin for any snowbirds. Time to start looking into southern winter storage options and calling insurance companies for coverage. Btw, NY now requires anybody traveling here from most (especially southern) states to fill out a health questionnaire or face a $2,000 fine.

Kinda figured this was going to happen. I won't be surprised if the Erie Canal gets pushed back on fully being opened next month.

Should be some good deals in Florida this winter for condos.
Over three million Canadian go to Florida in winter time.
Most insurance companies will not cover you when there is a travel alert.
Will have to stay home this winter and shovel snow first time in ten years.

Trust me, if people still can’t travel overseas Florida will be just fine this winter. Domestic tourism outside of headline grabbing Disney world or vegas spots is up dramatically. The small tourist towns and condos outside miami will still packed with people.

Hopefully the Canadians throw the book at them, immediately seizing their vessels and throwing them in jail. When a few lose their million dollar yachts, get fined a million dollars and spend a few years in a Canadian prison I think word will spread through American marinas faster than the virus. If they happen to make it back to the U.S. they should be treated the same here. For all intents and purposes these people are smugglers.

I was being facetious.:D Should have added an emoticon. I am aware of AIS requirements, in fact used
it off shore (receive only) many years ago with an ebay home cooked receiver plugged into a lap top.

My remark was regarding the articles inference that ALL yachts cruising in Canadian waters had one
and were turning it off. Which is of course..... BS.

The rule for AIS for Welland Canal is any vessel over 300 Tons need AIS
Yes I have turned AIS off in the canal as Seaway dose not really enforce it on pleasure craft as on commercial traffic if ship goes over speed it will set off a speed alert on that vessel.
The reason we some times turn AIS off is for speed limit.

Ok, the ArriveCAN app is not up and running yet for Canada and considered not used. I called 1-888-226-7277 to give them a heads up that I will be clearing into port colborne on the 12th, they told me many customs offices are closed with the pandemic and I need to call fort Erie and clear there, so I called fort Erie to ask and they knew nothing about it and are supposed to call me tomorrow. Has anyone cleared into Canada yet to go through the welland Canal? I plan on going to the pleasure craft docks in port colborne onthe 12th clearing, and going down the welland on the 13th.

With the Covid border closings the running assumption is they do not want the owners on board they want to make it very clear that this is for transit only not recreational. But that is only what I’ve been able to gather from afar and with some input from this group.

I really do not no the answer. You can call Canada Customs 1888 226 7277 and ask them what you have to do. I have two more down bounds this Thursday where owners are getting of in Buffalo.
Note you must check in with Seaway Traffic by 7 am for your transit I recommend to come to canal the night before your trip as if you arrive around 6 am the day of your trip it may take Customs two hours to come to your boat and you will miss your turn for the locks. I have a boat this weekend owner operator who is going to try and go through.
