Is anyone a local or an expert on the Erie Canal? Curious to know what they think it might be like come August 10 when things get opened up or if they will actually open on time. Wondering if it’s going to be a mess with all of the pent-up traffic.

Doubt you'll have many transporters at that time westbound, but you may have a some eastbound out of fear it could close down again as the virus kicks up again but I'd think most will be moving in Sept. & Oct. . There'll probably a lot of locals though. Other than that it'll be hot with a fair horde of flies.

THIS. Not too many leaving the Great Lakes August. Maybe a few going East bound.......the Erie canal is never "high traffic" in that it's an issue. There is NO commercial traffic on it anymore.

True, but this isn't any other year. There's boats out west that need to get east and a lot who make the annual pilgrimage heading south in the fall. Between the possibility that the work out west could get extended, keeping that route closed and Covid 19 having closed the Erie already and the risk that it could come back and shut it again all bets are off when it finally opens. Then you have Canada in the middle. Only time will tell.

There is no such thing as an expert on anything in 2020. We can't possibly know if they'll open completely on August 10. They could physically get open and restrictions be in place by then. Let's see if the work scheduled for July completion is on time.

I don't anticipate a mess going either way. There's always a bit extra right after opening. There will certainly be more West to East than normally at opening with some trying to escape the Great Lakes and the other routes blocked. Still I don't see it as massive. Heading East to West I think it will be less than a normal May opening as there won't be the usual group of Loopers.

I am hoping the delay in opening is only due to the needed construction that got delayed. I would hope that outdoor construction would continue to function. I guess construction delays are not abnormal though.

I believe that the Erie Canal is now open. Welland is a different story.

Parts are open, not all. Well, technically all the canal is open, just not all the locks are operating.

It is very confusing. That's from the Notice of 5/19. There was a notice issued today regarding the Waterloo lock and I misread (I think). Interpreted as being the last, not the latest lock to open. An overall updated notice would be nice.

Thanks. That's what lead to my confusion. Maybe anyone going should keep a list and update it themselves. Strange year.

The bulk of the canal is now open. According to the website there is just the holdup at oswego.

Yes, but a rather significant hold up, especially if coming from Lake Ontario. Between that and Welland, a challenging summer for travel.

Last of the locks scheduled to be completed still on August 10. Hope they make it.
