    How far can you run a line from the head to a holding tank? Just curious for a winter project that I need to take care of before I have an issue...heads are nothing fancy..dometics

    Dometic has an actual number for that. I forget how many feet it is, but call them. I think for Vaccuflush it's 20'.

    speaking of vacuflush, does it require more maintenance then an electric or manual?

    I think so. While they're usually pretty reliable, they have several wear/maintenance parts. Raritan and Headhunter are much simpler designs with no maintenance.......

    The vaccuflush pump has to be within 20' of the toilet, the hose to the tank can then run another length.

    Theoretically as long as you have the correct fall , run it as long as you want. This is after the vacuum Gen if you have one.
    If electric then right from the head, again assuming you have a macerator at the toilet.
    It's just basic plumbing math.

    One consideration is the fact that over time, no matter the quality, the "stuff" WILL permeate the hose.... Do you really want a 20'+ air un-freshener running through your boat?

    A common solution to this is to run hard PVC pipe as much as possible and just use the white hose where needed. The PVC does not permeate.

    For VF the 20’ is the limit between the head and the vac pump. On my 53 I have about 35’ between the pump and the tank. The distance was even longer on a 70 I used to run For other electric heads the distance varies.

    I like VF because they rarely fail completely. You may have an issue with a seal or duckbill that cause cycling but you can turn it on and off manually until you can get to it.

    headhunters are the best but they need to drain down. Can’t have long horizontal runs which makes them hard to use on smaller boats unless you use a small tank and an automatic transfer pump that comes on at each flush.
