I am bouncing around between a 56 and 52 Ocean. Tell me the good, the bad, and the ugly.

J&T 8V92s were a beast in them. CYA and look closer at the one with the better records and fresher engines.
Inspect well the saloon deck and aft bulkhead where engines would be R & Rd thru.

High hour gen-sets make great moor anchors and have negative value.

Galley Maid heads and pumps were factory. Still serviceable but expensive and temperamental.
Hopefully someone has upgraded the heads.

It's two surveyors near 2 days each for detailed reports that I would want.

There are some great Ocean owners on YF.
Give them a few more days to chime in.

Would you have any direct questions in the mean time?

I have a 2002 52 and love it. I think the exterior profile of the 52 is better proportioned, interior layouts are the same but the 56 interior, particularly the master stateroom, is nicer. My complaints are not enough storage in master stateroom and cramped engine room. I have no complaints about handling but have not been in big seas. The 52 is extremely responsive in docking. My previous boat was an Ocean 45 and there is a big positive difference in handling Great Lakes chop. (I have gone from Michigan to the Bahamas and back twice in the 45 and I would say roughest part of the trip was Lake Erie chop). I think you will find either one is very livable. (I am primarily a cruiser not a fisherman).

I have a 1987 44 and love her. Ditto on the survey. I would inspect the salon windows for water leaks, about 10k to fix on smaller Oceans. If yours has 8V92 or any 2 cycle Detroit, they are a bit noisey on the tournment style fly-bride.

What Motors do you have in your 52? Can you give me some real world fuel numbers? Do you have an airconditioned bridge, If so is it effective?

I have CAT 3406e’s. At cruise (24 to 26 kts.) I get about 0.5 nautical miles per gal. At 7-8 kts. It’s well over 1.0. Do not have bridge a/c and don’t miss it.

I have the 56 and love it. I have the Cat 3406e engines. I am actually going to put her up for sale because we now have a second home. She has the bridge a/c and a full enclosure and is perfect in any weather. No complaints at all.
