If we decide on a faster 5 stateroom boat...

What would be the faster counterpart to the Westport 130? Still looking at build quality, maintainability and seaworthiness. And decent crew quarters of course.

AB 140 runs about 46 knots. Heesen has 45 meters at 30 knots, 40 meters at 27.5 knots.

Having a difficult time navigating the AB site, but the 140 certainly looks interesting. Westport will probably be our choice, but the allure of speed could pull us in to the AB orbit. Hmmm. Heesen doesn’t appear to have enough speed to be worth leaving Westport. Oh well, back to the AB website.

You're talking two entirely different types of yachts AB/Westport. Why would you need to go so fast? Most owners on a tight schedule simply fly to the yacht in the area they want to cruise.

Capt J, I probably will stay with Westport. The fun of going fast would be the only reason to defect. But I think the smaller windows and less interior room (?) of AB would steer me back to WP. The speed would be fun though. And jet propulsion is intriguing.

Actually, an interesting point, if you are suggesting the 50 meter is faster because one can run at higher power settings for normal cruises due to the longer range. A very interesting way of thinking. Draft is a little deeper than we would like for the Bahamas. Funny though, my eyes keep drifting to the 164 and 172 whenever I am on the WP website.

If you are intrigued by the fun of going fast, I struggle to see how any WP could even remotely deliver that.
Since as I understand you were not impressed by the AB140 interiors, you might wish to consider the Pershing 140 instead.
Not as fast as the AB, but much faster than RoRo ferries anyway - which is more than can be said of any WPs... :D

I'm a big fan of Westports, and have run many of them during my years working for the former owner of the shipyard. They are very reliable, and the customer after service in unparalleled.
There are ver few places that you can't take a 164' Westport if you know the Bahamas well enough.

If you're looking for the "faster counterpart" to a WP 130' then an OM 130' should be on the radar? OM like WP are also, plastic construction, production in numbers, have MTU 4000's series power plant, and could utilize a similar amount of crew depending on the specific operation. Personally, after spending time on both I feel a 130' WP is far more practical and versatile than a "go fast" 130' low profile two deck jet boat. If short range, limited weather windows and cruising 28knts+ is what you're after then there are certainly candidates like the ones mentioned on this thread for you.

In comparison to other TDMY's the Westport stands out. For example, on a clear and clam day running a 130' WP from Newport RI 0800 at cruising speed 22-24KNTS has you arriving in Nantucket easily in time for lunch. All while 10 guests can spread out amongst three decks whether they are tanning, reading, sleeping, or enjoying time in the wheelhouse underway. You will be blowing by and waiving to your full displacement counterparts and then watching them arrive in the basin maybe in time for dinner.

There is something to be said for the Westport 130'. Although not a full displacement steel hull trans Atlantic capable boat they have their place just like every other yacht. The 130's a coastal cruiser, with extended range capabilities yet also able to pick it up and go for a quicker arrival yet shorter range. Here's a shot from Alaska years back, on this trip in total we put over 6k miles under the keel in 11 months with minimal hiccups along the way.

Fair question. We were not intrigued by speed until recently. But I think we will stay with WP, which should please Mr. Wakefield. Looking at the Pershing site now. Thanks!

We do like the looks of the Pershing 140. Watching the video, it occurred to me we could buy the WP 130 for sleeping and relaxed cruising and a second fast 60 foot boat when we want speed. As the French might ask, “pourquoi pas?”

Well the little faster Heesen mentioned are semi-displacement hulls and the fastest like AB & Persing are planning hulls. There was one really fast planning hull tri deck called "The World is Not Enough" or TWINE for short. There is a thread here on that boat.

We would never surrender our WP 130 for a faster boat, but we are going to also have faster, although smaller. Now, many WP owners regularly cruise at 12 knots. We regularly cruise at 20 knots, with WOT of 25. That's a huge difference to us. 12 knots, we just don't find suitable for us, but 20 is fine.

We obviously share Ken's view of WP. The professionalism throughout the company. I'll give you just one added comment. When it comes to any type equipment problem, from passerelle to engine, there's a big difference in having any of those items vs. having them on a Westport in terms of being sure to get the service you need as WP won't just say it's a manufacturer's problem, but they'll assist if needed. If we were to decide to move up in size from our 130', we'd be very likely to stay with WP. We know there may be others as good, but not better and why take the chance that they're even as good. Heesen is really the only other brand that has come to our mind.

We have an AB (116) on order, but we're under no illusion their service will equal WP's. We hope so, but don't anticipate it, although they've been great to deal with so far, even with a pandemic hitting.

As one who owns a WP 130 and has an AB 116 on order, one doesn't buy a "go fast" low profile two deck jet boat for practicality, even though a 4' draft and ability to cover 500nm in one daylight period has some benefits.

Probably replace something but not sure what. Will replace something smaller though, not larger.
