    David, that is strange that they both don't have fuel. I guess us who don't carry as much could run down to Polestar or Port Charles before getting into the Illinois and making the journey back to Chicago. Thanks for the heads up. Looks like your making pretty good time.

    We went through the lock North of Demopolis and are anchored for the night around 277 mm.

    NOTICE TO MARINERS – 2020 CANAL SEASON OPENING SCHEDULE

    The New York State Canal Corporation today announced that much of the 524-mile Canal system will open for through navigation of the locks by July 4, 2020 as maintenance and construction projects are set to resume on a regional basis under the “NY Forward Reopening” plan.

    Canal Corporation crews and contractors will mobilize to work sites in the Capital Region, Mohawk Valley, Central NY, Finger Lakes, and Western NY regions as those areas reopen. Maintenance work that needs to be completed at specific Canal facilities varies by location and locks along the Erie, Champlain, Oswego, and Cayuga-Seneca Canals will open for passage in a staggered fashion. Announcements regarding specific lock or regional openings will be communicated through the Canal Corporation’s “Notice to Mariners” notification program available atwww.canals.ny.gov.

    OPENING SCHEDULE (TENTATIVE)

    Capital Region – “NY Forward Reopening” Date TBD

    • Erie Canal from Lock E-2 in Waterford to Lock E-9 in Rotterdam

    • Champlain Canal from Lock C-1 in Waterford to Lock C-12 in Whitehall

      Mohawk Valley Region – Locks opening in phases, targeted for between July 4th& August 10th

    • Erie Canal Lock E-10 in Cranesville through Sylvan Beach at Oneida Lake

      Central NY Region – Locks targeted for opening by July 4th

    • Erie Canal from Oneida Lake to Lock E-25 in May’s Point

    • Oswego Canal – except Lock O-7 in Oswego

      Finger Lakes Region – Locks targeted for opening by July 4th

    • Erie Canal from Lock E-25 in May’s Point to Locks E-34/35 in Lockport – except Lock E-26 in Clyde

    • Cayuga – Seneca Canal – except Locks CS-2/3 in Seneca Falls

      Western NY Region – “NY Forward Reopening” Date TBD

    • Erie Canal Locks E-34/35 in Lockport through Tonawanda

      As maintenance and construction work commences, most boaters, paddlers, and anglers can access sections of the Canal system for recreational use today. Mariners are advised that some sections of the Canal system will have reduced water levels until such time as the Canal Corporation completes its projects. In addition, navigation aids are not currently in place, but will be installed on the Canal system as the regions open.

      All users of the Canal system and adjacent Empire State Trail are encouraged to practice social distancing while using boat launches, trails and other public resources.

      The Canal Corporation appreciates the public’s patience during this time and urges all users to register to receive updates through the “Notice to Mariners” notification program

    You guys are making good time as well. We went through the Barkley lock because Kentucky was down for a two hour delay then had a double. Short day today with a stop in Paducah. Still not much debris but the Asian carp at the lock were nuts!

    I always recommend Barkley Lock for recreational. So much faster and fewer issues. Plus it allows you to utilize Green Turtle Bay and, in cases where needed, get barrels there. Every day I've checked, Kentucky Lock has had lots of commercial traffic and long delays.

    No power or water at the Paducah city dock but the price is right, $0. Head into town and eat at Doe’s. Chicago good meatball sub sammy and they will allow you to take a beer with you to sit across the street on the benches. They also walked our order over to us. Safe travels.

    We had a shorter day distance-wise, we made it to Smithville as the owner had to stop and meet a client in Columbus.

    Three of my favorite stops between where you are, Capt J, and Kentucky Lake are the Friends Cemetery in Columbus, MS aka the land that time forgot, Lee Spry Marine in Iuka, MS -- Lee has always treated me well when I needed to be hauled out for repairs, and Clifton Marina in Clifton, TN where owner Gene Davidson pulled out a bottle of Makers and told me some tall tales about his life while I was getting fuel. Like Gene, Lee is also in his 80's and had a lot of rich life stories to share as we were hauling my props to the prop shop out in the country. Very memorable.

    Great push down the Ohio then we hit the wall making the turn up the Mississippi. Not bad though, 4-5mph current. A little debris in the river but not a lot. Made it to the diversion canal in Cape Girardeau for the night. Got a call today, Port Charles is at $2.20 a gallon now. Must have gotten a delivery because it was $3.15 the other day when we called. Had a Sea Ray pass us on plane back on the Mobile and understand they trashed both props south of Alton. Repairs to be done tomorrow. Safe travels.

    You will likely start seeing more current and debris. We've had nearly 5" of rain in the last 48 hours here in Chicago. Our boat is still on the hard waiting for the new props we ordered, however speaking with friends in Milwaukee where we keep it part of the time, there is a lot debris flowing out in Lake MI as well.

    We made Clifton, TN last night from Smithville, today we'll make Green Turtle and fill up all of the drums and plan is to do 9.5 knots all of the way to the Mississipppi and then run at cruise (21 knots ) up the Mississippi. What's the current like on the Mississippi David?

    Hmmm...Haul out , props, and running gear...keep saying that while on the helm and invert the 21 to 12 or less knots..no need for a long haul out and repair.

    Hi all .great updates from all the captains and owners .it looks like we will be leaving west Palm early June following your route as the Erie is to unpredictable.

    What charts and publications do you guys recommend ?.
    We have all the electronic charts but want to carry cruising guide etc .whats a must?

    As soon as we get to the lakes that’s easy been there for many years

    Check your electronic charts to make sure they provide sufficient detail on the Mississippi as some don’t. I personally like Navionics and am getter more/better info on my iPhone than I am the dedicated Garmin’s.

    LOTS of missing markers on the Tenn-Tom and Mississippi, but run the rivers like they’re there. I’ve seen several doing the submarine thing. One minute they’re there, the next there’s not even a ripple in the water.

    Thanks for the heads up Freebird. Spoke to some of the marinas in Illinois yesterday, and they were just above flood level, so it could be a little interesting on your way through there. Spoke with Grafton and Alton marinas, and no diesel Grafton, and Alton will only be during F-Sun due to restricted hours. Illinois Yacht Club has lots of fuel and East Port Marina said he can get fuel if you really need it, but doesn't have his fuel pumps up and running yet due to restrictions.

    Good luck on the rivers, and thanks for the heads up. I've got my iPad loaded up with Navionics and the boat has SIMRAD on it. Planning on leaving Lauderdale on the 29th, so hopefully all of the rain in the Illiois / Ohio region has had time to recede by the time I get up there.

    We’ll top off at Polestar or Port Charles. That’ll be plenty to make Racine. Alton only had 4’ of water the other day, but that may no longer be the case.

    Made the call to short stop at Hoppies (ETA noon) as it was extremely doubtful we could make Polestar before dark running into this current. Hate to lose the time, but it’s no man’s land if the locks are unkind.

    Our biggest obstacle is going to be removing this arch to clear the bridge in Chicago. Outside that, we’ll be good anchoring should it come to that.
