Here’s a tip, use fasteners SS fasteners called Foreverbolt for a non-bleeding g SS screw on your new rub rail. They are available at Grainger and Ace Hardware, West Marine didn’t want them because they last too long and they wouldn’t replace them at the rate of their standard SS fasteners:

Thank You, Pac man Blue! But I'm having trouble finding them in- #8 1.5'' Oval head tapping screw. No dice at Grainger or Ace. Just other Forever bolt products.

Are the foreverbolts really that much better than getting 316 ss bolts that are pretty readily available?

    The short answer is yes.

All SS fasteners sold in the US are being sourced from China, including 304, 316 and 316L which we typically see in the Marine Industry. All the big box fastener names are just resellers. These fasteners, due to surface imperfections and material make-up, tend to bleed (rust) overtime when used in our harsh saltwater environment.

ForeveverBolt started when the high end custom house market in coastal California had too many complaints of architectural SS features looking like crap from bleeding. ForeverBolt came up with a proprietary treatment that addresses the imperfections from SS product made in China, and has proven to eliminate the nuisance bleeding. The owner grew up with a boatbuilding background and understands the issues faced in a saltwater application.

They tested product in the Alaska northern oil fields, at the end of the season the customer removes their equipment for repair and they have been told their fasteners were the only ones they could remove at the end of a season with a normal wrench/tool, all the others had to be torched /cut off due to corrosion. Other tests have been done with the same level of success.

Currently they are stocking Flathead and Buttonhead fasteners as the global market for these types is significantly larger, Oval Head Fasteners are available by special order by emailing them directly.

What do we think of their hose clamps?

I have a couple of them on my desk. They are noticeably brighter in appearance and would do great in the Engine Room or in the Bilges.

I don't know about their hose clamps. But can whole heartedly recommend AWAB and then ABA second. Both are extremely high quality.

I need to correct the sourcing of SS fasteners from China. China has experienced a bit of a bump in wealth lately and have shifted a lot of production to willing nations like Vietnam, so less and less SS fasteners are coming directly from China.

The Hose Clamps are sourced in the US, Wisconsin to be specific. They have a much smoother interior finish than other hose clamps and will not cut the hose surface even though their clamping pressure is higher, plus you can dress things up a bit and get them treated in black SS.
