    Hi all,

My wife and I continue to shop around for a part-time live-aboard, intending to spend our summers on her in the PNW / BC area.

We've found a boat of interest in San Diego, a 1996 Hatteras 65 which has been lengthened to 70'. Her interior really stands out relative to sister craft, the aft deck is unique and very appealing, and our tour of her was positive. We like the Hatteras reputation. There are several items of deferred maintenance that would need to be addressed (teak is tired but still thick, hatches need new lenses, all instruments need to be updated, bottom job is 3 years old, etc.), but nothing major. (Needless to say, a full survey would happen.)

    https://www.yatco.com/buy-a-yacht/detail/259757/1996-hatteras-motor-yacht-main-category/

The listing history is quite long by now: For sale continuously since June of 2017 (for $895k), there have been a few price reductions and she's still over-priced at $795k for a 24 year-old boat. I've floated a "what if" offer of "six-something" past the agent and apparently the seller welcomes that conversation.

In reading between the lines, it would seem that we are the only potential buyer even thinking about making an offer. It's nagging at me as to what is scaring everyone else off from this boat. Is it the 5' extension? Is it the 24 year old 2-stroke Detroit Diesels at 3000 hours? Just over-priced? Something else? I'm also imagining what it would be like to try to sell this boat in, say, 5 years.

Happy to receive any and all opinions on this.

    Thank you,
    Bryan

How does this compare to other Hatts, base boat to base boat?
I feel the state rooms decor and other areas are to personal and you will tire of it quickly and be redone quickly.
To much wood in and out.
The alloy window frames are notorious leakers.
She is over priced for a project boat. Over priced for a former charter boat?
IMO, No telling what kind of market California will have in 5 years. Figure what you can sell her for then and offer that now.
    Then there is crew.

How about a condo and smaller cruiser in the PNW / BC area. Two operators and in 5 years will have something.

This boat was mentioned on the hatt owners forum and supposedly the extension / stern was done by a reputable yard

personally I find two issues with these boats. First indeed the DD when just a couple of years later you can find the same boats (well without the custom stern) with one of the best motor ever installed in boats that size... the Cat 3412.

Second is the balcony instead of an aft deck. Great in cold climate or if you have skin issues :) otherwise it s a deal killer for many. I ve had A few owners that wouldn’t even look at these boats because they wanted a decent aft deck. In fact we ve had two charter guests who said they picked us for charter over comparable size hatteras because the boat we ran had a much bigger aft deck.

Look close at the pictures, all the headliners are falling down.

Pascal has an older personal Hatteras and pushes large charter boats all over S Florida and the islands.
He has been there and been in it.

Yes, The 3412 would be the better engine in these ole ladies.

not unusual for boats of that vintage... that’s a $20k to $30k job to do it right.

There are also a number or stains on the wood against the ceilings which means re veneering after resealing whatever is leaking g

    Oh Sheetrock..
It took a year for me to fix all the overhead leaks in the galley P&S on project L3.
Leaks in the fly bridge coming after Hatteras of Liquordale was finished modifying, the one I much later managed.
    1989, 65' with 9' cockpit extension.
    Looks very similar.

Yes, that's very true. About half of them have been redone (after these pictures were taken) and this would naturally be part of any negotiation.

I agree on the 3412 vs DD. There are two other Hatts we've looked at in SoCal, both with 3412, and I wanted to like either, but unfortunately the rest of either boat was pretty disappointing.

And great feedback on the aft deck. We would be bound for the PNW, as I mentioned, and that's where she would presumably be resold. But good to note.

    Thank you,
    Bryan

Looks pretty comfortable, the headliner looks like maybe aftermarket and can be redone easily with panels. A nice and comfy PNW /B.C. summer retreat.

Engine room looks not too bad, plenty of guys here have Detroit’s. Depends on how many running hours you plan on putting on annually.
, but Pacific Power in the LNW or Cullen Diesel in B.C. are long time Detroit service/ parts resources.

Maybe get a marine surveyor to run some comps before coming up with an offer, get a better read on today’s market price. My gut feeling is lower than 600’s as it is a 26 year old boat but get some data behind your offer first. A buyers broker/rep could also help, but not the listing broker.

I'd be looking to pay in the 500's personally. Several things come to mind on the boat. The 92's are right around the corner from major overhauls, if they've never been overhauled. And, a glaring one, the stern should have an additional fuel tank in it to counter act the buoyancy and trim change after adding 5' of buoyancy to the stern with the extension, not a holding tank that is usually kept empty. It might run ok with the extension, but every one that I've seen on a Hatteras had a fuel tank there to add weight. Then start adding up the this' and that's.

I ran a 1988 65' Hatteras MY that was extended 10' for many years, it had a covered aft deck with a nice bench area facing aft and was great, underway you had a great view astern and at a marina, because it was elevated. Then we had a ton of storage underneath it and a 5' cockpit set up. I did the entire Great Loop in her and many Bahamas trips for about 10 years.

Engine room used to have a hallway down the center and bulkheads (walls) up either side.
I prefer the open room but it does make more engine noise around the boat.
Generator is usually forward in it's own bilge space. If these are the original OhNo MD4, 20kw, take off $35k each.
Parts are not available. New 20kw NL and install will be about $35k each.
If the newer OhNo 20s, survey very well.

I am a Detroit fan. 12V92s can go either way pending how they were run. Documentation will be a must. Without records of oil samples and injector maintenance, assume the worse.
At 3000 hours, normally your planning on a rebuild in the next couple of years anyway. Think $3k per lung plus parasitics.
    Survey very well.

Incredibly helpful feedback, thank you all! We have an experienced agent looking at boats for us and I'll discuss all this with him to get his feedback. I really appreciate you arming me with a number of items for discussion.

    Such a great forum!

Didn't think of that, will need to listen but of course no sea trials until an offer.

Yes, they are both just aft of the forward cabin in their own space. Both looked original and are at around 4000 hours. Definitely a bargaining point.

I have asked for oil analysis records and apparently none exist. An oil change is due and I asked that samples be taken prior. (If this request gets blown off, it'll be a red flag, no doubt.)
Nice data point on the cost - $72k for the two V12s... is that right?

    Thanks,
    Bryan

$72k for the long blocks. In frame (on board) work.
Hoses and consumables (hose clamps, coolant, oil, filters, zincs, paint, cleaners, rags, hazard disposal, etc) should be mostly included in that number.

    Plus parasitics.
Replacement or heavy service on Turbos, blowers, Heat exchangers, exhaust manifolds. Head replacement if cores are not rebuildable.

Although my 74 is on the East Coast, given the recent price drops o 459K, you could buy her, saving a ton of money even with the cost to get her to the West Coast. Check her out. 1996 74 Hatteras with HMY in Jupiter Florida called the Nancy J.

I would be very surprised if you can do a thorough rebuild of 12v92's for $36k per engine ($72k total). I did a complete rebuild of one of my 12v92's about 4 years ago and it was way more than $36k. Granted mine were TTA's but I can't imagine that drove the cost that much higher. I used Pac Power in the NW. Parts alone were way more than $36k. But I did everything, tore it down to bare block and rebuilt from there. I had a post on it when we did it.
