‘04 38 Convertable, original salon carpeting. Pretty beat up in salon, not bad going down steps into cabins. I have had a throw rug over the beat up part for a few seasons. Looking to redo. Any experience with this? Another carpet? Laminate? Can i cut at steps and just do the main level? Any suggestions appreciated!

Get the same stuff if you can; synthetic carpet so it won't grow mold and mildew and you get it wet etc. easy to clean.
Stick with carpet it absorbs sound. Please don't put that Home Depot glue down plastic laminate junk down, or any laminate for that matter. Unless you want to de-value your boat. IMO. Keep it same as factory look.
Sure you can cut it at the steps. Just anchor it back down well.

I had my carpets replaced 4-5 years ago by a local home carpet company near my marina that was experienced with boat installations. Took them a single day to install.

We replaced with a carpet with a mildew restistant brand they recommended with textured backing that was good for boats. I forget the brand name, but I can dig back into my records to find if you want. My engine access is under the salon floor, so for that area I had the carpeting split in three sections (Port, Starboard, Center), with each section bound and installed with DOT snaps on the corners.

There are some non-removable carpet areas down in the cabin areas that were glued to the hull as was the originals were, and this is where the local carpet company's expertise came into play handling all of the angles, elevations and adhesives. Also, with the leftover carpet material, the vendor made a remnant piece that floats over the entire middle section which bears the brunt of the daily wear and tear. My stairs and Galley are wood floors, so no carpeting there.

The advantage for me was that I can remove the center section to access the engine room without taking up the entire carpet. When doing maintenance and needing to get to the outboard side of the engine room, move the furniture, snap out the appropriate section, pull open the floor panel, and I have full beam access to the engine room. Also in the winter, I remove all carpet sections and take them home for cleaning/storage, replacing with Harbor Freight moving blankets until Spring.

This has worked well for us.

I had this faux teak and holly put in my boat. It is a sheet good. It has held up well. Dont be shy saying you don’t like it. I have small dog and some wine drinkers and didn’t want to deal with stains. Very easy to clean. CE837228-9231-43F7-B1DD-61B7FEEC3A51.jpeg

Does anyone know of a good online source for marine carpet or at least marine suggested carpet types? I need to find new carpet for my salon and hoping to find a color/pattern to go along with the rest of the carpet in the staterooms. The new carpet will meet the existing at the stairs at fwd end of salon. I really don’t want to replace all the carpet throughout the boat so looking for a source with a good color/pattern selection. Thanks!

Your down below, a good quality interior carpet will work just fine.
If it gets that wet you have bigger problems.

In my previous boat I installed the Home Depot Lux Vinyl tile, I did not like it. Too heavy and easy to nice at the hatch edges.
Current boat has Home or Lowe's Carpet installed like in post 3 and it holds up very well.

The syn teak and holly looks great but I could find was too pricey for me.

You want Fabrica carpet. This is what all of the good builders use.

Replace the original with new marine grade carpet at your price level and color. If you can, lay an acoustical pad beneath it.

For those who install carpet almost any synthetic carpet will do. If the installer has marine experience all the better for the reasons stated in post 3. but most are pretty good at figuring out how to deal with angles and such. I highly recommend keeping a mat at the entrance to catch the dirt and wear at that point and to make spraying the carpet with Scotch Guard part of your annual routine.

Soundown padding went underneath our new carpet. It has made the salon noticeably quieter. We used the 1/2 thick to have it align around the edges to the carpet tack strips. Not too expensive about $500 out of a $3700 project. If you use it make sure the installer reviews the soundown web site.

that looks amazing! The exact flooring I preferred but could not convince my wife. Also an exception install. I have seen a few that did not line up the hatches well and looked terrible.
