Viking Engine mounts adjustment

    Engines are 671tib. Need to do an alignment and am a little stumped. The mounts look like they have shims and hard bolted to rails. Any insight?

    Had the same setup on an 89' Viking 45 sf. You just have to remove or add shims to correct the alignment of the couplings, not as easy as cranking adjuster bolts. Takes more time.

    What did you use as shims? How did u jack the engine up to add shims

    Blocks of wood and a bottle jack usually work pretty well.

    I was taking shims out at the gear to lower the coupling. Used a pry bar to raise the engine at the mounts. The shims are just flat rectangular pieces of metal with different thicknesses. Check your mount bolts to see if they are tight, then check coupling gap to see which way you need to move the engine, you may not need any shims. Pull one if you need shims some have bolt holes or slotted. O'reilly auto parts has a good variety. Good directions on alignment:

    Curious how you know you need to do an alignment or suspect a problem? I'm guessing you have some vibration and suspect an alignment issue? Before you go unbolting the mounts or jacking things around have you unbolted the coupling and checked the gap to see how far out you are aren't? Once you determine how much you need to move and in which direction you can make a better plan. Be careful where you put your jack if you do need to move things. I prefer a hydraulic porta-power and pancake head to using a bottle jack but not everyone has these.

    During survey the surveyor noted that the prop shaft is sitting very low in the log, also noted it needs cutlass bearings and they were not worn evenly. The propsaft definatly needs to go up a bit. While out of water going to replace cutlass, and check for binding. Most likely shaft will have to be raised as its extremely close to log. Raise trans while on land and then final when goes back in water.

    It will be interesting to see how far out your shafts are from center of the logs once you replace cutlass bearings. Obviously this has to be done first, get your shafts back to center and then align to that point. What type of seals do you have? Since you are pulling shafts to replace the cutlass bearings make sure you do a run out on the shafts to check for straightness. I would also suggest doing an NDT on both shaft ends to make sure they have no cracks or indications. And do a blue fit on your wheels to make sure the contact area to the shaft taper is within tolerance.

    How much difference can just the cutlass bearings make in the location of the shaft log?

    I'm lost.
    How do you know you need an alignment when it reads as needing new motor mounts? Yes, mounts wear (rubber fails) and motors change position because of this.
    How are you going to service your alignment when it reads as you have never been here.
    You have all of your fingers? If you want to keep them, Have a real shop do this.
    I'm hoping your surveyor offered an average price to fix.

    Trying to save a few dollars by working on your own boat is great. That is how most of us have learned ourselves. Lots and lots can and is accomplished by the owner. As many here, I have scars to prove it. Including shortened finger tips.

    Your going to need a yard to pull the cutlass bearings, Let them put it all together. You can use your saved fingers to take pictures of your new ship and big smiles with all your digits.

    Solid motor mounts. Hence the shims. I have always done alignment anytime i have messed with running gear or replaced engine. Some go by the pencil mark the mounts.
    Get the right tools, take time, wear gloves- that will keep your fingers safe.

    I have shims also. From 2 3/8" to 3 1/2" is all shim up. A lot of spacers to roll a block over into alignment.
    Think this is the style of mounts on Vikings also. Solid mounts may not have been factory for the TIB.

    Don’t know if this helps but here is a picture of a Viking motor mount that I had replaced. It. Had previously been cross threaded (I think). I was surprised when I learned that motor mounts are not as simple as they sound. Different engines require different rubber.

    Dockmaster laid it out. You have work to do before aligning the couplings. Post a picture of your mounts, if your setup is like the 45 Viking I had there are no rubber engine mounts.Engine is bolted hard to the I-Beam bed on shims. If your cutlass bearings are worm badly the shaft may align with the shaft log when replaced. On my 45 the we pulled all the shims on the stb side gear mounts to align the coupling, could not go any lower without modifying the mounts. It was misaligned at the factory or the hull was sagging.

    Is that the bearing from the shaft log or the strut? Definitely needs replacing. What size shafts do you have? Are you checking the shafts while they are out?

    Yes shafts getting checked. Shaft is 1.75

    What do the bearings in the shaft log look like? Unless you only have one per side?
