We are considering a second Westport 130 for US west coast to Alaska cruising, maybe Hawaii. Fiji etc eventually if my family likes the longer runs. Any thoughts on draft considerations, range, anything? Would a bigger Westport with more range be required for the longer Pacific trips and would the deeper draft be a problem?

A 130' Westport's 3000 mile range will get you from the US west coast to Hawaii, and pretty much anywhere else after that. And the 6'6" draft will not restrict you much if at all on the Pacific side. Is that what you are asking?

A 130' Westport will make the distance if you stay in the 10 to 11 knot range.

The draft is not an issue anywhere you'd go. We did the West Coast in one but didn't cross the Pacific. Maybe next time.

I've also known people including a member here to cruise to Alaska in a 164' Westport.

Exactly what I was asking, thanks.

There you go again, making me look at the 164. I keep averting my gaze, but it sucks me back in, to coin a phrase.

Well, I'd still stay in the 130' range if I intended to do coastal cruising and cruise the US. If my primary goal was crossing oceans, then I'd go bigger. Now, I might go for the 172 instead of the 164.

Yep that 172 is a nice design. They were coming out with a 45m as well but haven’t seen any recent developments on that one.

The 130' is a nice size where you can still dock at many marina's if you wish. The 164' precludes that and you're stuck on anchor and dealing with a tender to go to shore. Quite frankly, I don't like having to get in and out of a tender to get off the boat, and no matter how big the boat is, I still want to get off of it.

Having run both, I would prefer the 164' if I was going to the South Pac. For that kind of cruising I think bigger is better! The 130 can certainly do it, I pushed mine to the limit several times weather wise and I never felt I was in danger.
My owners on the 130 were thinking of moving up and one of the concerns was dockage, in our cruising area Maine to Carib, I would say about 10% of our usual stops would not be available at the 164' size.

I've also run both, and have cruised Alaska and the South Pacific with a 164'. There is no comparison between the 130 and 164 in volume, comfort, working and storage space. I don't think the 130' is up to the task for extended cruising off the beaten path, but wouldn't hesitate with the 164'.

Very interesting. Unless my wife finds she enjoys the long trips, we probably will stick with a 130. Time will tell.

What thoughts on 164 vs 172?

Having cruised the west coast of central america up to SE Alaska on a 130' I can advise that you plan your main engine oil change services in advance. Most pre 2009 130' Westport's do not hold enough dirty lube oil for a complete main engine service. The MTU 4000's typically have a 55USG oil sump and the dirty lube oil tank capacity if memory serves correctly is around 60USG.

Not difficult but an added logistic to a trip like your thinking about. Easy to do dockside with the local outfit supplying the oil and empty barrels for the dirty lube.

Maybe the WP130 for the east coast, Caribbean and Med, the 172 or 164 for the Pacific. I could live with that.

Or take the boat from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

Or just buy a boat first, so you actually have one, so you can actually do anything at all! :D
