my 2000 post 50 with MTU 8v183 engines decided that the port engine alarm should ring out after storage for 6 months when circuit breaker was put on at the electrical panel in order to allow ingnition to be switched on and for starter to start engine. Alarm doesn’t go off even though oil and temp are reading fine. Even after turning off ignition and stop controls alarm is still sounding until breaker is turned off. How can this be Thanks Dan

One of the sending units is probably stuck closed. Most likely the oil pressure sending unit since the boat sat for six months.

Give it a good tap rite after starting cold.

I think this is an all mechanical engine.
No error codes. Same POS senders as the newer engines.

Would the clutch have a pressure sender? Heck, rap it also.
If you don't fix it, you will feel better rapping something..

It depends. Used to be all mechanical up to the TE92 version (i.e. the 666hp rated V8).
But if by chance the OP has the TE93 (i.e. the 767hp), which is also the last version of 183 series, it's actually electronically controlled.
In fact, based on his description of the problem, I suspect that this might well be the model he has.
And if so, I'd rather involve an MTU dealer.

Engines are 8v183te93 as you have suspected and will arrange for MTU tech to stop by. But I cannot understand how the alarm would be powered before the ignition switch is activated and start ringing out after the breaker at the panel is turned on

I can't tell you why exactly that happens in your boat, but I'm not so surprised to hear it, either.
And both for the very same reason, i.e. that all electrical connections of the engines (also back in the all-mechanical engines days) are made at the yard upon installation, with some builders who follow strictly the engine manufacturer's recommendation, and some others who don't.
In fact, coming to think of it, it might be worth asking also the builder, on top of an MTU tech.
But I have no idea about how supportive they are at Post.

I wasn't thinking electronic for that year but one more simple electrical question. With the breaker on and switch off is the alarm the only thing on or do you have power to the panel and starter button? The ammeter will probably be showing line voltage and if you push the starter button the engine will roll over. If so your ignition switch is probably stuck closed as well. I've had the opposite problem before.

The only thing that comes on when the breaker is turned on is the alarm The panel will only come on if the ignition switch is turned on

Does the alarm normally sound when you turn the key on and then goes away when you start it?

Yes the alarm usually comes on when the key or ignition switch is turned on and goes off shortly after starting . It now comes on before the key or ignition switch is turned on which means its being powered by something else somehow

I wonder if it's an engine room alarm of some kind.
    High water alarm maybe?

The high water alarm is wired to a separate alarm than the engine alarm

Sounds like a relay somewhere in the circuit is stuck .Might supposedly momentarily energise when turn on to test everything like the klaxon , then it suppose to de activate while engines are running normally, until the proper alarm sentry if necessary tells it .

Bit like all the dash lights coming on momentarily when you start your car , testing all the alarms / circuits before you drive off .

Or the klaxon itself has a short .
    Look at that first .
