l have befriended an owner of 57 Viking 2011 with man 12 cyl engines with the zf electronic controls that like sneak into reverse on starboard eng and doesn’t necessarily come out to neutral when prompted or goes to forward. This is particularly unnerving when docking as you can imagine. Anybody know anything about these controls and these symptoms?

There have been some complaints. Some of the earlier Mathers versions were sensitive to supply voltage issues.

Z F seems to have fixed the Mathers issues they inherited and moved on to an even better platform of their own. I would contact Z F Support directly.

Contact ZF support, but sounds like the control head or actual control is bad.

Typically this is caused by low voltage, many times loose or corrosion on the control head connectors, or at actuator boxes. Another place to check is any terminal strips/ junction boxes inline. A dropping voltage makes the system think it’s supposed to be going into reverse.

We had a similar issue on the same engine package in different boat. Turned out the transmission wiring harness was bad. ZF had used some inferior (chinese I asume) wiring and the insulation just turned to dust when you touched it, causing short circuits. Installed new harness on both gear box's and all is well.
