There are three yachts riding out the storm in downtown Norfolk next to the battleship Wisconsin. They are Alessandra, a 157 food Trinity that was launched in 2004, Lady Pegasus, a Westport 130 delivered in 2011, and Cru, a 96 foot Westship delivered in 1991. Considering that only a couple of feet of additional surge would flood downtown the Norfolk flood gates were closed this afternoon.

The boardwalk from the Pagoda to downtown Norfolk where you can see that only a few feet of additional surge could flood downtown.

Now here is a real sea wall with retractable floodgates!!

Much of Norfolk were inlets back in the day that were filled in over the years to create usable real estate.

Unfortunately when the inlet that is now City Hall Avenue was filled in the effects of rising water levels were the stuff of science fiction.

Several downtown streets would flood with several feet of water during any major storm event invading the basements and first floor of hotels, office buildings, etc. so the sea wall from Town Point Park to Tazewell Street was erected to prevent flooding.
