Any of you guys know where the AP compass is located?? I am trying to troubleshoot a recent problem with my AP which I believe is the original install Robertson/Simrad. I have found everything except for the compass. I've checked what I consider to be the likely places with no luck. I know I can trace the wire from the Jbox, and will likely still have to do that.. but it's buried in a massive cable bundle with poor accessibility and I'm hoping someone here might be able to save me some time.

    Thanks

On my 38 it is under the lower bunk on the port side . I don't know what the layout of the 40 is , but it is a place to start .

This has been asked before. Do a search on YF when you can.

Indeed... I found a post where you kindly tried to answer the question for someone with a 43' Cabo. I did not, however, find anyone who had asked or answered the question as it relates to a 43' Ocean. I posted it here in the Ocean forum knowing that there are several other 43' Ocean owners and was hoping for their input. I will do my best not to ask a question before searching. Thank you.

Ah, A Cabo, I was thinking an Ocean or a Post. I have CRS attacks some times.

On my 44 it is located under the crew or mid ship stateroom, center line bunk near the forward end. Access by lifting the mattress and lifting out the access hatch.

Prospective you've probably found this by now, but... On my 43 the electronic compass is mounted in the salon lazarette where your 110v potable water pump and water heater would likely be located. Against the engine room partition, under the stairway.

Thank you. I have not located it yet but I have not looked around in the salon laz. I will definitely check. Thanks again for the tip.

My AP flux gate compass is located in the compartment with fresh water heater and pump but it is under small hatch in the floor where the original raw water sea cocks are for the two bathrooms. My two sea cocks have been abandoned and bathrooms are fed with fresh water now.

Welp... I found it. Basically where you described. It is mounted to the back side of one of the risers for companionway stairs and is accessed via the laz hatch in the salon. But the real head scratcher is that it's well behind the hot water tank which is glued in place with 5200 and there is NO other access to it. Must have been mounted before the hot water tank was installed. I can't reach it to touch it let alone replace it. Only options I can see are to remove the hot water tank or pull up the carpet on the stairs and pull a tread to gain access. Why would they mount something like this with zero access?

That's odd because Ocean usually didn't install any electronics, they left the factory with a VHF radio and a compass. We actually hired one of their captains that did the deliveries back in the 90's and he never had any electronics for his deliveries. It was quite the trip coming from Boston to FL because he did it by the book the old school way, navigating with paper/compass and finding sea buoys.

Agree, seems like electronics rigging would be the last thing done, regardless of it by Ocean or elsewhere. But I'll be darned if I can figure out how they would have mounted that compass with the hot water heater in place.

Perhaps install the new one somewhere easy to access and leave the existing one in place disconnected
