Project Fiji was launched today and named Madsummer as expected. I think she is really good looking and reminds me a bit of the 80m B&V and Eidsgaard collaboration which was presented some years ago.

I don’t think there is a helicopter hangar in the bow; none of the construction photos suggest it and there seems to be a large side tender hatch at main deck level on the bow which would limit the space for a hangar. It might be like Jubilee that can tie a helicopter down on the bow though.

Areti 2.0, Passenger Yacht Code, SOLAS Rescue and Life boat in the bow. Nice looking, well balanced boat with a much more usefull sun deck than Areti. SOLAS certified heli landing pad but no hangar. Same setup like on Areti and Quattroelle. GAP and technical arrangements most likely very similar to Areti. Must be pretty close to 3.000 GT. I am starting to like her !!

I am at Lemwerder and Aumund tomorrow. Will post what is going on on the Weser banks :).

Good looking yacht but also doubt that there is a helicopter in the bow. Will be interested in seeing if she will be available for charter. Seems like she might also be over 3,000gt unless there was some creative engineering.

TIS and Alamshar will be there. Mad Summer was launched in Rendsburg.

It seems that Alamshar will never be out of the yard.

Inspected the banks of the river Weser for yacht and Yard activities in the area of Luerssen, Fassmer and Abeking today :). From the yachtspotting point of view a bit boring but satisfactory because the yachtspotting was not my primary reason for the visit.

Project Redwood in floating dock 3 at Luerssen plant Warfleth completly scaffolded. Looks really huge, when standing in front of the dock. On the hard behind Phoenix II. A pretty long time at Luerssen since her orginal owner died.

Aumund looks pretty empty without the large covered floating dock but the covered dry dock is busy inside.

    IMG_0002.JPG
At Luerssen Lemwerder only TIS is visible. Alamshar is inside the shed behind TIS. I really do not know what convinced Luerssen to accept her for refit or whatever. They have refused several times before to work on her.

    IMG_0003.JPG

Front quarter shot of TIS. Sorry for the weather but a very good looking boat.

    IMG_0005.JPG
A lot of final cleaning and outfitting going on on her and at her. Looks like, she was not delivered up to now.
Again a very balanced and beautiful yacht. Very similar setup and layout like on Madsummer and Areti. Same internal and external designer as Areti. All boats are according PYC with tender and rescue boat store in the bow with covered service deck and helipad above. TIS is just bigger and better proportioned and in my opinion more practical with her walkable side decks.

Some members have asked wheather there would be a helicopter hangar in that bows. There is no space for that purpose in that area. The Passenger Yacht Code is asking for an SOLAS Rescue Boat and a SOLAS Life Boat located at Main Deck level or above and the boat sitting on deck level (on craddle not hanging on the roof).

Below a view from the boat deck of Areti. This area is completly used. Even on a bigger boat like TIS, there is no space and no height for a Helicopter hangar.

    Areti Main Deck Forward.jpg
Furthermore some detail shots of TIS

    IMG_0007.JPG
Nicely visibile the very practicable side decks. Makes life easier for crew and guests. Please note the privacy doors on the owner deck, a very convenient feature for yachts with permanent crew. The bigger volume is nicely used, especially the highest deck (sun deck) with the second Heli pad (non SOLAS). By the protective film I would say, she is not delivered jet.

    Some more pictures to follow.

Some more details: Closeup of the stern. Still covered with protective film. I like the wooden look inserts on the stern. Looks almost like the back lights on a car. A very interesting detail is the pool on the aft upper deck. The rear wall made of glass gives a view down to the lower decks and over the stern. Very nice design!

    IMG_0009.JPG
Did You know, that the lower fairleds on the stern are led through stainless steel tubes into the upper fairleds and use the same bollard. This feature is similar on Areti, Madsummer and TIS. On my Boat, the lower fairleds are led on starboard into the emergency steering room and on port into the wast compartement. Of course, both fairleds have enclosers behind the bollard and the fairleds are also closed, when going to sea. This new design is just great and very simple.

    IMG_0010.JPG

Note the rear fold out for the beach club / wellness area. State of the art design !

    IMG_0012.JPG
Very generous Owner Suite and outside deck area. If this yacht can cross larger bodies of water without storm blinds, the glass of the owner suite windows and the owner balcony must be very strong.

    IMG_0013.JPG
Very large hatches for those 40+ ft SOLAS tenders. Due to blue hull colour and the high quality fairing and painting, the door is almost invisible. The same counts for the starboard aft fold out balcony of the beach club.

They must have designed a new type of bulbous bow, I am not familiar with. Totally different shape. CFD is Your friend.

I nearly highjacked the Madsummer thread but most of my point count for all three mentioned yachts. These Rendsburg built 85 to 120 Meter type of yachts have set a new trend and one can really see the advancements in design from for example the Quattroelle aera. On the last boats, Andrew Winch and Luerssen have formed a really good cooperation. When a designer and naval architect gets the oportunity to develope the external and the internal design of a yacht, the outcome is a much better boat. The problem is, that not many designer can do both.

In the beginning, I had many reservations against the PYC but these "little" PIC yacht are very nice. Madsummer must be at 3.000 GT but TIS is definately above 3.00 GT. A huge boat and a real beauty and so is Madsummer.

At Abeking there is only one smaller boat under complete scaffolding on the hard outside their large shed. But all sheds have work going on inside. I promise, the next time I visit a Megayacht hotspot for YF, I will order nice weather.

We really appreciate the photos and text HTMO! "TIS" is a real looker... Andrew Winch did a superb job with Lurssen on this one... and "Madsummer" is pretty good looking herself, a nice elevation from the 257-footer.

    Thanks for all that information.
Kind of disappointed there was no helicopter hanger.

I guess Tis went to Bremen because they need the other outfitting quay for Madsummer. They have got another one at Rendsburg but its maybe to small and hinders the launch of the next hull and superstructure.

That is correct. The fire in the floating dock at Aumund has most likely caused a lot of replanning and reorganisation for several projects. Only by using all facilities and plants of the Luerssen Group, they are able to stay within all or at least most timelines. Busting a contractual stipulated delivery time can get very costly for any yard. A fire in a yard may be taken as Force Majeure for a specific project but not for the others. Flexibility is here the key to industrial strength. Using dock 3 at Warfleth for project Redwood with scaffolding instead of the covered floating dock at Aumund is one of those examples. I think, B&V Hamburg and its surrounding facilities will be used in the future a bit more for yacht projects and bigger refits. From what I have been told, the covered floating will return to Aumund after some heavy repair.

Some years ago, builders with open dry and floating docks were unable to provide the same quality in fairing and painting as yards with large sheds. But today with the modern modular scaffolding techniques, especially with this new types of "shrink and adhesive" plastic materials, they can create a totally enclosed temperature and humidity controlled shed type enviroment with no degradation in product quality.

Head of project planning and work preparation in a yard with such a production rate of large and very complex yachts must be a real stressfull job. And the production of military and governmental boats at Luerssen Werft is running parallel in the same facilities.

The floating dock at Rendsburg can take some pretty big yachts but its deadweight capacity is limited. During the construction of Pelorus, they came pretty close to the limits.

But all three yards on the Weser River, Luerssen, Fassmer and Abeking are pretty busy. Fassmer is expanding largely. They have taken over the former Luerssen Bardenfleth facility and they are building pretty large new sheds and buildings on their main areal. And Abeking has almost doubled the possible length of their boats.

But we will see also smaller yachts in the 50 to 60 Meter range from Luerssen in the future. I do not believe, they will leave this market segment completly to the Dutch and Italian yachting industry. The problem for Luerssen may be their price tag on those boats. The large overhead of their engineering and logistic is pretty costly.

But as we say, money makes the world go round and quality pays off :D.

    Just my 2 (Euro) cents

Wonder where you read there was a helicopter hangar? Don't believe everything you see on the 'net. You can tell by commonsense alone there could not be a hangar below the pad as the yacht's main tender garage is directly below. How are you going to install transverse cranes across the beam and still have a hangar. Of course you could use other swiveling crane applications but the overhead trolley type cranes are pretty much the standard on large superyachts garages.

Beautiful, an almost timeless kind of design. I predict in a decade, she'll still look like a contemporary yacht.

HTMO: thanks a lot for all those insights and information. As you have "expanded" this thread to other Lurssen yachts than MADSUMMER, I put my question here: do you have any idea what's going on with project ICECAP?

This South Florida yachting family has come a long way since the launch of "Monkey Business". Funny how that was considered a large yacht in its time.
