46 Post Prop size

    It may be time for new wheels on my 46 Post w 671 TIBs

    According to prop calculators and what is on the boat:
    3 blade 24x24 is on or close to what my application calls for.

    Is anybody running a different wheel on their 46 w TIBs?

    How about cupped? slightly cupped?

    4 blade?

    Since you're here on Long Island, maybe stop in at Boesler and Sweezey in Bellport and ask their opinion.

    Hey RT

    I am running a 46 up from Fla in two weeks, that has 25x25 four blade. I ran the boat 21k cruise was not inpressed. I have run one with the 450hp with 24x26 cupped. The boat had a tough time coming out of the hole you almost had to have it on the pins, but when it got going it would run 22k to 23k cruise. That was loaded down. You might want to contact Randy Hale at Hale propeller in Ct he knows his stuff.

    prop calculator is saying 24 x 24.6 cupped.....

    I would speak with Randy Hale. All boats are not the same and he can explaine to you. He will tell you about 5 Cabos brand new all the same size, same power, and all 5 have differnet props on the to run right. My 42 has 24x26 with a cup 450 hp, a twin 42 with same hp same wheels has to run at 2250 to my 2150rpm and I walk away from him with a tower. I have run with a 43 with the TIBs same thing. I would speak with Randy 860-388-5434 it can't hurt.

    Really? I've run somewhere in the neighborhood of 350 Cabo's. Most of those were engine startups where we tested how they ran. Cabo used the same prop for the same engine on every boat they built with that engine/size and they all performed the same.

    That's a lot of Cabo's. He told me that it was in the early times on the either the 35 or smaller. His point was you made five hulls do you think they all weigh the same. One could have a 1000lbs of more resin in the hull there's the Monday boat and the Friday boat.

    I know Cabo builds a quility boat but I can understand his point. Why is my boat faster than the same with out a tower. I ran a 42 ocean with two others. Same boat same power same prop, same fuel and all three at the same RPM and all were a knot or two different. I think each boat has to be played with with props to make it perform correct. Just my two cents

    Hey RT Just ran a 46 up from Fla with the four blade wheels 24x25. Full fuel we ran 19k to 20k at 2000rpm. When running on the inside the boat came out of the hole better than the 3 blade. Fuel burn was 33.3 to 38.5 depending on seas. After running a 46 with 3 blades and a 4 blade I would perfer the 3 blade.

    Sounds more you like the 4 blade? If not, please explain so I understand better...

    With 4 blades (or more) you get better bite for getting onto plane and staying on plane (in some boats that are borderline) as well as less vibration. However, you'll get more speed with 3 blades. All things being equal as the 3 blades have less drag due to the reduced blade surface area.

    I have run both 46s with the 3 and the 4 blade. The 4 had the better bite, but the 3 makes it run faster at cruise. It all depends on the boat.

    It's all in what you have in the boat for weight. I delivered a brand new 46 1984 with the 450hp full fuel it cruised at 25k at 2150rpm. When the owner took possession of it, and put all of his stuff on it the cruise was at 21k 22k full fuel. That was a three bladed.

    I've read a lot of the prior about 3 & 4 blades- I've got two sets of Federal Props 24 x 27. My WOT is 2400/2370- on fresh rebuilt engines (20 hours)- I know I'm over propped, getting soot on the transom and EGT's are 800/900 at 2100 rpm.

    I plan on using Hale in Old Saybrook to take a few inches off the pitch and cup- i should be 24x24 reading above, right.

    Question: what are the EGT for dry turbo's suppose to be?

    Is anyone with a 46 running 4 blades and have a spare set to sell or swap? I had them on my 42 Post and loved them...

    I have a set of S&S Katapult 4 blade props, 24x24 IIRC

    Have a 3 blade set as well, not sure of the size though.

    Rt my 46' had tib's with 24x26 federal nibral 3 blade props on it. 25 knots wot at 2550 rpm, 21-22 knots at 2200-2250 rpm
