I have been looking for a Trawler style vessel and just can't find my way to spending $600k or more for a boat. Being offered in my area is a Hatteras Motor yacht with cockpit. 2 cycle Detroit's and looks in excellent condition. Any opinions are welcome.

Is there a link you can add so we can see the boat? Hatts that have been looked after can be a choice buy, same with DD engines if they have service history.

It s hard to beat an older hatt. They were build like tank with excellent systems compared to any trawlers of that era. Things like fiberglass tanks, heavy copper plumbing, robust electrical, etc

The DDs are fine if well maintained Fuel burn will be a little higher than a trawler, around 16/18gph at 9 to 10kts but keep in mind fuel is only a fraction of overall annual costs

Actually fuel burn is a lot less with the 2 cycle detroits. 12v71 TI's burn 12 GPH (both) at 1000 rpms, which should net you right around 10 knots. Cruise is a bit more 80 GPH at 18 knots in that boat. I ran a 70', it was a very nice boat, full beam engine room, master in stern with it's own staircase and the rest of the staterooms seperate in the bow area. I'd take it over a trawler.

Yup, I have 1271TI's in my 55' Hatt Convertible and I burn 12 gal per hour at 1000 RPMs with the Gen set running.

In the process of buying a 65' Hatters C. She has 12v92's and with her prop set up running at 10 knots with gen set running she'll burn around 19 an hour. My 55' C, burns 12 at the same speed with 12v71's. A 70 Hatt MY with 12v71's at 10knots should burn around 15-17 an hour.
When we take delivery of the new 65, first thing I'll do is take 2" of pitch out of the props perhaps more based on how she is currently propped. I could are less about speed just want to take off as much stress on the engines, gears and underwater gear as I can. Also, will lower fuel consumption.

Prop it to achieve around 2350 rpms, don't take more than that out. No worry about the gears or underwater gear, removing pitch won't really do anything for them for the most part.....It won't lower fuel consumption either......because you'll just lose the same amount of speed that you lose on fuel burn at each RPM point......

......I run a towerless 65C sometimes with 16v92's.......non ddec's a rare animal......it runs really good, boat runs stern heavy on plane even with a dinghy an davit on the bow..... 1650 rpms gets it about 17 knots at 60 gph believe it or not........1000 rpms is around 12 knots if I remember correctly. I drain the cockpit fuel tank at least halfway down first...... then valve one engine to the bow tank or center tank depending on how she's running.

Where is the boat located that you're buying? If it's Jacksonville, it's one of my customers and he's owned it for a very long time.......I've never seen or run that particular boat for him, but have run dozens and dozens of other yachts for him that he's owned or owns......

I hear ya on the 2350. We hope to sea trial this week. Heck they may be fine just the way their propped now. Sometimes I get ahead of myself.

LOLOLOLOL, that would be him. He owns dozens of yachts. I've never seen that one, but he's owned it forever as his personal boat. I've delivered a lot of yachts to him and worked for him over the years. He's crazy for sure and getting old but always has been good to me.
