I know we have talked about LED light before but the technology seems to be moving very fast from incandescent / halogen to LED. I have upgraded my engine room, bathroom and stateroom lights with leds.
What a difference in heat and watt reduction. OK the cost is higher, but I think the benefit on the boat is overwhelmingly greater.
Has anyone changed out the salon overhead lights with LED's that fit into the existing acrylic light fixtures that snap into the headliner. My halogens are M62 20W 12V dimmable. I have tried the MR16 bulb and it is too big. Can anyone steer me to a physically compatible LED bulb that will fit into the overhead assembly?

    Thanks

    Dave

M62? What kind of bulbs are these?

The most common are G4 (bi pins) and there are a bunch of LED alternatives. I ve also had good luck replacing MR16 with leds. They be all become as cheap has halogens if you shop around

The M62 is stamped on the GE halogen that I have. I have been researching online and found that the correct designation now a days, is a MR11, G4 base,(narrow 2 pin base) and dimmable. The bulb has to fit into the existing fixture.

I switched all of my G4 bulbs to LED throughout my boat, a total of 155.You need to bypass the existing transformers and install voltage regulators, not that big of a deal. The toughest thing is actually locating the transformers, any decent electrician can do it.I get all of my two pin LED bulbs online from Oracle lighting.

    Different boat, different fixtures, but...

We got all our current G4s from marinebeam.com. Mostly side-pin versions, but a few back-pin (orientation looks like in your picture). Their site gives the dimensions of the discs.

Never saw an "Mxx" or "MRxx" designator...

We had no need to do anything else; no new transfomers, new dimmers, etc. They all dim just fine, but perhaps likely because of the kind of dimmers that we're already built into our circuits.

Search Amazon for mr11 led. The plain G4 discs won't work as thy won't have the reflector and will be set too deep. I had to replace a few MR16 in the galley and found some that were the same price as halogens,

Check th dimensions are some can be bigger than the halogens.

Make sure you get warm white color. Not daylight or cool white.

Mr16's won't fit in the fixtures. Looks like we need an LED with the reflector or a cover over a smaller wafer in order to use the existing fixtures. I called Skandvik and they don't have anything that would work. I will research the other leads you guy's have offered. I also saw Capt J's notes over on the Hatteras page but I still have not found what to use. Thanks

    Thanks.

Marine beam has some MR11's that may work.

Check the prices and compare. Anything sold by an entity with "marine" in the name will be 3 times more ...
