I would like to strip a Vetus hydraulic ram to replace seals, but how do I get the end cap off.

Depending on which ram you have, you may be required to remove the plate either from the top or the side of the cap using the pin-holes. Each tool is readly available.

Hi thanks for such a quick reply
I think that my cylinder is a MTC 175 but I need to check this when I get to my boat, it's the short fat one that Vetus do. The end caps are smooth and round with a small hole on the opposite side to the inlet/outlet tee fitting.
I don't think there is a plate that can be removed, but I could be wrong. Could you tell if the end caps are threaded on to the cylinder and the tool is just a c spanner or does it unlock the end cap and allow it to be removed. Thanks Martin.

Yes, the cap is threaded onto the cylinder. Either internal or external threading on the cylinder.

    Thanks again
I did try to unscrew the end cap quite a while ago using a Stilson, I will get the proper tool for the job and I hope to get a better result.
Thanks for such a quick and useful reply........Martin

Firstly you will need to purchase a Vetus repair kit as you have to destroy the retaining ring.

Remove the T piece and look into the orifice, you will notice a round stainless steel ring approx. 3mm dia.

Use a c spanner to turn the end cap whilst observing into the orifice, eventually you will see the end of the stainless ring. This must be wedged up through the orifice where the T was removed, then revolving the end cap so the ring is extracted. Note this seems impossible but you need to securely clamp the cylinder but do not distort it.

The new locking ring looks like a L shape, the short leg locates in a drilled hole in the cylinder and is pulled around with the end cap in effect a reverse of the dismantle.

The first time I did one it looked mission impossible but is relevantly easy but make sure the c spanner is a good fit so it does not damage the end cap and under no circumstances use a stiltson wrench as you could distort the cylinder
