We presently have NEC computer monitors in the wheelhouse, which are now starting to fail and need to be replaced.
These monitors were top of the line 12 years ago, but really were not the best for this application. In looking for new monitors that are more specific for wheelhouses I am finding them extremely expensive, $25-3500 for a 15" monitor. I can replace with an inexpensive computer monitor, although difficult to find in the right aspect ratio, but hoping there is something in between these two options?

You very much remind me of...me. I too try to squeeze all the juice out of my tech stuff, due to sloth and frugality. HD on my IBM (pre-Lenovo) T14 just packed it in after only a dozen years. Loved that XP OS. My LG (dumb)phone is even older.
    You get the idea.
A suggestion: traipse on down to your local Brandsmart. A month or so back, I was shocked to see a Lenovo G50 going for ~$300. Pal of mine got it online for about twenty five clams less.

Have an HP age 10 with Vista. Reliable.
Acquired an Acer with WIN 7. A bit wiggy, but better than WIN 10.
Both are 15", never had aspect ratio issues with either.

Yes, it's a laptop. Nobody--NOBODY--uses a desktop in this day and age.
This, coming from a tech troglodyte.

Have you tried looking at large drawings on a 15" laptop? This reply was typed on the right hand of twin 26" monitors connected to a desktop.

Guess I am a Nobody

Using my desktop 'puter everyday. Donated away the last laptop a couple of years ago when the house was invaded by iPads and never looked back.

You've know the old adage... "there's no replacement for displacement", well there's no way I could do what I do from a laptop! I'm on a pair of 27" monitors and wish I had more pixels.

Randy, have you tired Craigslist or eBay?

    HaHa!

Really--K1W1...Norseman...Carl... you guys are truly Heavy Duty High Tech Gods and I salute you!

BTW, they occasionally have sales on reading glasses, which I highly recommend.

I will also freely admit to having a magnifying glass in my office within EZ reach.

Not to take this thread out of focus, but I work with about a half dozen programs open at once, not including my browser, which has about 6-8 tabs open at any given time. I know K1W1 needs a lot of screen-estate for his work as well. At some point, I will add a 3rd monitor.

Getting back to Randy's inquiry, I would think you could find comparable NEC monitors on eBay, likely at half the price of the original equipment if the monitors are discontinued. I haven't Googled it, but there may be dedicated websites for selling old monitors and related computer equipment. Let us know what you find Randy.

I did find some on eBay, supply is running low though!
I found some nice monitors that seem to be similar too the high dollar "marine monitors" for about 1/3 the price, seemed really nice. For now I was able to replace the broken ones with eBay finds.

The Comark 19" Pilothouse Monitors are built to a very high standard. $995 last price I got. http://comarkcorp.com/products/?swoof=1&product_cat=industrial-display,19-0

The problem now with most standard PC monitors is the glossy screens. Our Hatteras has 3 17" Acer matte screen monitors in it that have served extremely well; I found the glossy screens on our Apples to be problematic requiring a lot of adjustment.
