Another Miami Boat Show adventure is in the books, but
which one, where, and how do you to get there?

    by Tom Serio

For 2016, the Miami Boat Show committed urban sprawl. Tag along with us (it beats the bus!) for the Yacht and Brokerage Show along Collins Ave, which has been rebranded to the "Yachts Miami Beach" show. This used to be the place to see the "biggest and baddest" yachts in the area, as well as new arrivals. Well, the big boys were MIA, relocated to a new venue on Watson Island and called "Superyachts Miami"; now located at the Island Gardens Deep Harbor Marina off the Port of Miami... you know, where ships berth. Not a bad idea to relocate the dock-consuming vessels but the general public couldn't gain entry without an invite, broker escort, proper credentials or a bag-a-bucks slung over their back. Uh oh, I'm out! :(

Now I'm forced to fight downtown traffic to hit the main show at the Miami Marine Stadium on Virginia Key off the Rickenbacker Causeway. Huh? Yup! Nay, nay, say some of our YF brethren. Parking was at best - not available - and the transit links, either by bus or water taxi was way overburdened at key times and locations, leaving attendees discouraged with the access and disparate locations.

But fear not... have Nikon, will shoot! Although the rest of the YF team was under the weather, the boat show was knot. It was a Chamber of Commerce day in Miami and I had Collins on my mind. Here's my digital stroll down the docks. Enjoy!

Tiara Yachts had a bunch of models on display, including their new 39 Coupe. Interesting in design and features is Tiara's Q44, a full walk-around fishing boat with a salon and cabin. Twin settees in the open salon (canvas backing available) make this a versatile cruiser. Side electric doors from the helm area (yes, ne each side) make for easy access for line handing, be them docking or fishing. Down below, the forward V-berths join in the center to create a sleeping berth. Looks like a winner.

Carver Yachts and their high-end brand, Marquis Yachts, shared the display on Collins, from the axe-bow wide beam of a Carver to the curvaceous styling of a Marquis. Among the plethora of craft there was the Marquis 660 Sport Yacht. With enough steps to seemingly get you to a higher standard, the 660 SY sports more curves than a buxom babe. True to form, Marquis does try to think about everything, including the bang-plate (that's what I call them) for the anchor.

As it was Valentine's Day, many were seeing red throughout the show...

    There was the Wajer 38...
And red Jaguar XE, complete with Jaguar grill medallion...
Miami is just not Miami without a red Lamborghini...
And you might just be seeing red if you have to repower this beast!

Of course, there were samplings from Italian builders like Sanlorenzo Yachts, Benetti with "Mr. D" and a gaggle of Azimut yachts.

There was new news about new offerings, with Cruisers Yachts showing off their newest yacht, the Cantius 54. With Miami the stage for this world premier, the 54 offers a voluminous salon with great visibility from any vantage point. With the Volvo Penta joystick on the left of the helm console, the operator can easily operate from a seated position or even standing centerline. Accommodations for guests are forward, and the master is full beam mid-ship. Notice the foldout table that can be used for lounging or mini office.

Stopped by the Princess Yachts display, which seemed to take up a few acres of space. Many models to choose from, but I like to see new stuff. Princess didn't disappoint with the North American Premiere of the PY S65. I've sea trialed and written about several Princess palaces in the past, and I do like their layouts, helms and general access. The salon on this S65 has ample room, stylish furnishings and atrium panels in the moveable hardtop. Two things stand out at the helm area: one is the co-captain chair for your main squeeze to be close by (keep your eyes on the road), and the side helm door for fast access to side decks.

Slumber time doesn't mean crawling into a subterranean bunk on the PY S65. Forward as a center-line island berth with side windows and good headroom (left the tape measure at home). Mid-ship is a full beam master with large head. Note the also-large shower stall. The claustrophobic factor is low thanks to the volume of space (vertically and horizontally) and side windows with opening ports. Twin bunks round out the accommodations.

Wait, there's more. This is a flybridge model, and there's plenty of comfort above with group seating, table and full-function helm station. Or head forward to the C-shaped settee and sunpad/loungers.

Strolling the docks you could find offerings from Prestige Yachts, Cranchi, Astondoa and the folks at Belize/Riviera.

Hatteras had a full display, although they were positioned a bit further south this year (maybe to get away from the competition). from their GT series of sportfish, to their mid-range express models to their motoryachts, the Hatteras team seamed busy with a steady flow of inquiring minds. Name the hull color you desire and Hatt can pretty much fulfill your wish. They already have the 100 and 60 motoryachts on the market, but did introduce their new 70 MY.

The Ferretti family of yacht brands showed off their "new to the U.S." display, and I think it's a hit. Each brand is now easily recognizable by large signage, with corresponding in-water yachts just across the way. Ferretti's hospitality tent is no longer, getting away from side panels flapping in the wind. Now it's a real building. With coordinated areas, matching wood flooring and structures, Ferretti has classed-up the display to match the products they sell.

When strolling along Collins Ave, you need to take in the sights (sorry, don't have any of those sights).

Of course the team at Hargrave Yachts was present, showing off their latest and how your presence on a Hargrave could make for a nice present. They also like CAT power, as evident in M/Y GiGi's engine room.

Either this is a geriatric fishing boat or they are going deep, reel deep.

Continuing on with the "new" concept, here's the Mazarin 72 Sport Fly. You may have seen this before, but I haven't so it's new to me. With a very interesting hull-side style, I was and still am curious about all that goes into her. I like the starboard helm door designed behind the helm seat, allowing for others to utilize without bothering the captain. Furnishings are all sourced internally, from fabrics to woodworked furniture, thanks to a partnership with IK Yacht Design. There are some cool ideas here, like the curved bunk-bed ladder, foldout salon tables, and lush fabrics. I mean, when I stepped on the flybridge sunpad, I actually sank into it, it is that thick and plush. Definitely need to get back onboard and get under the skin to see what makes the Mazarin 72 tick.

A name familiar to many, although perhaps becoming a memory, is on its way back. Bertram is resurrecting the brand with a brand new Bertram 35. From the classic lines of the 30-odd series of years ago, Mr. Morgan Bertram is committed to delivering the tried-and-true formula that helped to make Bertram famous. With plans on launching this summer, the Bertram 35 will be designed by Michael Peters Yacht Design, powered by CAT 7.1 diesels, and crank out around 40 knots. Even though Bertram had a display, the 35 on hand was the table model shown here. In life, some things just shouldn't die off, the Bertram name included. Let's see if son can do dad, Dick Bertram, proud.

Outer Reef Yachts had several introductions at the show, probably none so anticipated as the OR 550 Trident. With a cool blue hull, commanding sheer, high bulwarks and extended flybridge deck, I'm certain that it has a few more pleasant surprises.

As I was only at the show on Sunday, maybe I can't be a good judge of this topic, but attendance seemed way off from previous years. Not that it was a ghost town all day, but there were times where I noticed little to no traffic at vendor displays and on the avenue. The Vette in the garage didn't have a constant stream of gawkers trying to get an "Oh my god" or "Yeah, that's my yacht and ride" selfie to impress friends. Even the show girls had time to electronically fill the time. When we did find signs of life, well, even the shoe count was low.
