Sad news - Palmer Johnson Yachts in Sturgeon Bay to close

The other part I will add is I can't determine where it is heading to. The house of the lady who was nice enough to let me sit in her driveway for the 2 days stated she knew a worker that was being sent by PJ to Ft. Lauderdale to finish the yacht.

On the other hand when I was talking to the security guard at Bay Ship to see when Tracer was going to depart he stated that Customs and the Coast Guard had been by to inspect it. If it's heading to Ft. Lauderdale why would Customs need to inspect it?

Does this yacht have a name or do we know the model that it is?

As of this morning she is still in Sturgeon Bay and I don't think she will be going to Ft. Lauderdale as a foreign vessel can not load in a US port and unload in another US port.

Vessel Tracer is now underway and should be at the Welland Canal in about 40 hours, her destination is Montreal probaly to load more cargo.

Even if it just clears in and clears out that will break the chain and allow it to stop in FLL to unload of that is the intended destination.

Section 27 of the of the Merchant Marine Act of 1920 (46 U.S.C. 883; 19 CFR 4.80 and 4.80b):


"No merchandise shall be transported by water, or by land and water, on
penalty of forfeiture of the merchandise (or a monetary amount up to the
value thereof. . ., or the actual cost of the transportation, whichever is
greater... ), between points in the United States, including Districts, Territories,
and possessions thereof embraced within the coastwise laws, either
directly or via a foreign port, or for any part of the transportation, in any
other vessel than a vessel built in and documented under the laws of the
United States and owned by persons who are citizens of the United States"

Rodger - From what I can determine she left Sturgeon Bay between 6-8 am this morning CST.

Someone should have tossed a Delorme on it, before it departed, one with a very long lasting battery. lol

Her AIS still shows Montreal, a lot of foreign ships stop in Montreal for fuel so will have to wait until she departs Montreal to see her destination. She is flagged Netherlands.

I believe that under the FTA there may be exemptions to the transportation issue, certainly there are for foreign registered charter vessels. Now port of registry may be an issue as I am aware of the CDN US FTA issues as to charter yachts.

That's a ship that Sevenstar uses at times for Europe to US routes. They use those big lift ships for many shipments of yachts from Europe to WPB or PE. I've loaded yachts and been on that ship a few times in WPB. The other Biglift ships have really wacky names and have been on several of them also.

As far as the Jones act, as I know it. A foriegn flagged ship can pickup cargo from several U.S. ports but only unload cargo in one of them without going to a foriegn country. For example, could stop in NY and unload cargo then load new cargo, sail to Charleston and load more cargo, then sail to Port Everglades and load more cargo, then go to the Bahamas and unload cargo (foriegn port). You could also ship a U.S. flagged yacht from U.S. to Europe have it unloaded......then after the season ship could load U.S. yacht in Europe again and bring back to U.S. and unload.

Yes that is true as she stopped in Cleveland and loaded cargo, an officer on the vessel told us yesterday she was going to off load the yacht in the Bahamas and did not no where she is going from there. Two years ago a ship loaded yachts in Fort Lauderdale and off loaded in Sault St. Marie Ontario.

The vessel Tracer has now departed Montreal and it's destination is Freeport Bahamas ETA November 4/15 13:00 hrs.

I wonder if it will stay there or perhaps they'll tow it west to be worked on.

Well vessel Tracer arrived a few hours ahead of time.

I think it's Bradford that has a boatyard less than 1/2 a mile from there. Don't know if they have the capabilities to finish her, or she has another destination.
