I'm sure it's just as effective as it's the same basic contraption. However when used upside down it scares off the burrowing owls...

Get your own bird to hunt the gulls, like a Falcon or something. Then you only have one bird's poop to clean.

Better try something like a gull-eating parakeet or the cure may be worse than the problem.:)

I was in Rome with my wife in April and there was not a single pigeon in St. Peters Basilica. Always seen thousands in the photos and movies.
Asked the guide why and was told they are using a sonic deterrent. Which led me to comment on the obvious, such as connections at the "top" and trumpeting angels, Gabriel's got the horn tuned...which then led me to receive a sharp elbow in the ribs from my wonderful wife!
Seriously, not a pigeon in sight. Just a few very large sea gulls.

Not too many pigeons in Huntington Harbor, but lots of big gulls. Also, any kind of active deterrent (sound, light, constant motion) would have to draw down the battery.

I bought the "Bird Netting" used to protect fruit trees. I used some clothes pins to hook it to the railing. It took me maybe 5 minutes to set up. I'll be back Sunday to see if it had any effect and will let everyone know. If it works well i'll attach a pic!

Just make sure it's secured well. If it blows off and fouls someone's prop they won't be happy. Good luck. Looking forward to hearing the results.

I put a few heavy fishings sinkers on the four corners. If it falls off it's going to the bottom!

Better to secure it to the boat. Its would only be a matter of time for those sinkers to fray off and then that net will lurk in the Harbor, waiting....

Good point, I will make sure it's secure.

Being on the correct side of the equator, I believe they would turn the wrong direction too, rendering them useless.....

I am VERY happy to report 100% sucess with the netting. Not one drop of bird poop since I put it on the boat. On the down side, it is taking me about 15 minutes to set it up as it a bit too thin, which is making it hard to handke/fold up and store in any reasonable mannor. I think a thicker brand of netting, cut to my specific size needs would do better. However, the total sucess against the birds has me happy enough that I will invest a little more money/time into the "project".

Poop removal is another matter. I have been able to clean the canvas. Hand scrubbing alone did not do the trick, I had to soak it in a large bucket of OXY-clean piece by piece for about an hour, The problem remains the deck, specifically the non skid portions that still have an orange stain on them despite my best efforts (oh my back). Any thoughts? Its late in the season, I'd hate to get the boat professionally cleaned just to do it again in 6 weeks when I pull her.

    Thanks,

    Nick

I have to wonder if that canvas soaking might wash off the waterproofing. You might want to order up some 3M 303 waterproofing spray. As you found it's possible to keep poop off. The question is whether the cure is more trouble and expense than it's worth. In the end you may find it more efficient to either live with cleaning the poop or moving back into a marina. Good luck.

I definately think the waterproffing was was washed off to some degree. I have 3M that I apply each spring.

Thanks for all the help :)

Now, I can't testify to this, but my wife said she saw a seagull riding around on one of the spinner things like a ride at an amusement park. I have never known her to exxagerate.

Yes, cleaning bird poop off a Bimini top will eventually turn the top into a screen. I've had good luck using the 3M waterproofing spray on tops that still looked good but didn't even slow the rain down as it came through.

You've got to use a ton of it but I usually would get a whole additional season out of a Bimini. These days I'm a hardtop kind of a guy.
