I am planning to purchase a late 80's model 35 or 41. I would appreciate any first hand knowledge of either of these classics.

I own a 1977 Viking 35 that I have been restoring, it runs great with 454 Crusaders. There is a pristine late 80's for sale in Port Clinton Ohio and I thought about buying it, however, I am not sure I gain anything by spending the extra money. Vikings are great boats and the company is a joy to work with. They are one of the few companies around who are owned by the same people who owned them in the 70's. This may not sound like a big deal, but when you have questions about the boat, you can call the factory and they do their best to help and there are a number of key employees who were with the company in the 70's and now those boats were built. I have friends who are restoring old boats and the companies have new owners new employees and could not care less about the older boats and their owners.
Vikings have a reputation for allowing a bit more water into the fiberglass than Bertram or some other boats, so if you buy one make sure to have the glass and the rest of the boat thoroughly surveyed. If you buy one, I think you would be better off buying one that does not have a front window. I think the window frames are pressured holding all of the weight of the bridge and they develop leaks, mine leaks, I have been working on it and it leaks less than it did but it leaks.
I have been professionally varnishing the teak trim, it looks beautiful but it is expensive. Not many of them have the wood varnished but I think it is money well spent, it really finishes the boat off well.
The 35 runs great with gas engines, if I wanted a 41 I would definitely get the diesels.

We own a 1988 41' S F and love it. We bought it in Fla and redecorated the interior. I don't know if you like fishing but this boat has everything. We have enjoyed this boat from the beginning. We wanted the second bedroom and enjoy that layout.

If I can help to answer any questions you might have about this size and year boat I will be glad to. I can be contacted at ruffian111@hotmail.com or ruffianiv@aol.com or 609-758-8432. That is my house phone and on weekends we will be at the boat. Waxing and cleaning and waxing and cleaning.

The boat is rigged for fishing but we like to travel on the boat. I don't like taking out fishing trips because I don't like to have guys come on the boat without the proper boating shoes etc. And I'm particular about how I keep the boat.

We also like our new 40' motor home and are leaning toward selling this boat in the near future and staying with motor homing. We want to start seeing the USA. We both will miss our boat very much. No one makes a boat in this price range like Viking. The woodwork and construction is the best. Viking builds a quality. The Viking plant is about a hour from my boat.

Good luck and if I can help you contact me anytime.

Have owned a 1985 35 Viking Convertable for 11 years. My first diesel [3208t's] boat and love it. On the otherhand don't have anything to compare it to! Believe Viking makes a quality product and the few calls I've made to Viking were handled to my satisfaction. LOL!

I bought a 1986 41' Viking sporfisher last May. I love it and I am just now starting to replace a/c's, carpeting, etc etc. Mine was painted a few years ago so it looks pretty good but the generator probably should be replaced; I am replacing the electronics, carpeting, flooring, bedding, etc. It adds up quick but if you buy it right then you can still be under $200m. This boat raises billfish too.
