I don't think that's completely correct. I think he got off to a terrible slow start. He started out in an upwind leg and his trimaran couldn't point closer than about 45 degrees off the wind. His goal was apparently to finish the safety features he had envisioned while he was underway, and use the fantastic speed of the trimaran to win, then license out his inventions. Unfortunately for him the potential of the trimaran never materialized in his performance.

You will also find them even further downwind in Australia and NZ when the only way to get anywhere really involves going uphill ( sailing to windward).

A 20' Pacific Seacraft "flicka" is a great little sailboat with a ton of room inside and a lot of ammenities and could easily be lived on and single handed.

One of the videos I saw was of a guy who was married. Maybe they needed time away from one another.

Yeah, every video I've seen on the trip shows a pretty calm voyage. Almost like sailing on a lake with some chop, but no white caps. Just gentle rolling waves.

A couple guys got caught in a squal, but no real wind, and the ocean actually calmed some for the weather. Go figure.

That verse Monterey and everything north, where the Pacific always rides high (or so has been my experience).

If you pick your time and weather window it will be the same calm crossing. Most people do and enjoy the trip. If you are on the water enough, you will encounter some weather, but in general pre-planning will set the odds to your favor.

Southern California weather is much friendlier. North of Point Conception is a different ocean.

I've been to the William H. Seward Christmas party more than once, it's in Seward, 120 miles to the South of Anchorage.
Alaska Sailing club is in Big Lake, and they sail on the lake, which is a few square miles and some good fun, 75 miles North of Anchorage.
Alaska sailing adventures is a sail charter outfit that runs its business in anchorage but runs its boats out on the Prince William Sound, 60 miles south of Anchorage, and you pass through the longest combined vehicle railroad tunnel in North America.
Yukon Yacht Club called themselves a yacht club, but they were a yacht club "themed" hotel restaurant (if we want to be generous). They had no membership, and no boating related events or staff. They closed shortly after they opened and have been out of business for some time.
Poking around I also found out that the Tony Roma's (a chain restaurant, similar to Chili's or Buffalo Wild Wings) called their bar the Alaska Cigar & Yacht Club. It was similarly not a yacht club, had no yacht related staff, and has closed. At least the YYC was near the water, Tony Roma's was in mid town.

Those were the only ones on the list that rang any bells. There are a bunch of other businesses on there like white spruce trailer sales which have boating related appeal, but aren't yacht clubs. Or the Petroleum Club, which is an actual club organization for the wealthy and powerful, but not yacht related. There are also a bunch of anchorage yacht clubs in other parts of the world.
