    Hi Fitzy,

Depending on the total displacement you may also be able to have the non-turbo versions on 54/55 hp. I like the Volvo since it has lower revs and of course also since it is a Swedish brand :)

But otherwise I think you should buy where you get good service and Yanmar use to build very reliable engines. I have good experiences from both brands, although not this size of engines, only smaller and bigger.

    Yanmar

Hi Fritz As a delivery skipper Ive sailed/motored many many miles (150000)
and Yanmar engined beat Volvo hands down .
1/ Yamnar engines are smoother. In fact 7 out of 10 times I can tell what engine is installed by the vibration
2/ yanmar engines use less fuel , as I said if motored many miles and as adelivery skipper I have to pay for the fuel used so I pay particular attention to fuel usage , and the Volvos defineatly use more fuel . Im talking about the same types of yachts at the same speeds and the same revs The last boat a new 55 ft with a Yanmar used 2.2l/hrs the same boat with Volvos got 2.9l/hr Remember we were delivering and motorsailing so after 3000 miles worked out the averages for both trips
On 40 ft Catermarans the fuel for Volvo 1.8 and Yanmar 1.3 l/hr
With regard to filters dont buy "factory " units You can get premium quality filters from automobile spares suppliers ie Yanmar filters are the same filters that are used in Mazda ,Toyota and Honda cars at a 1/4 of the price as factory parts . Volvo filters both diesel and oil ,aswell as bets are available from Auto spares outlets , just select reputable filter manufactures

definately Yanmar for me. I've had nothing but trouble with Volvo but have thousands of miles with different Yanmars without a single problem. They go forever!

I would stay AWAY from Volvo....parts are expensive, service is poor (in the US anyway). The Yanmar will outlast a Volvo by far and be less expensive to service when required.

    Yanmar without a reservation.

    Hi,

After having been exposed to various flavours of Volvo KAD 44, KAD 44E and an older TAMD 6 Cyl Engine with separate cylinder heads over the years I think I can say I have seen a lot of what they have to offer in problems.

I am currently using 3 Yanmar 315 HP, 6LPA-STZP Engines in two tenders, one in front of a Hamilton Jet and the other two on Mercury Bravo 3 Stern Drives.

I asked around a lot before making up my mind and hope now that these Engines and Drives are as reliable as I have been led to believe they will be
