1999 450 voyager slow speed

    Carver told me the published speed was gathered on my boat since it is hull 1. Also most all 450's had the 450 cummins engines. The same that I do.

    A little update. I talked to a cummins tech today. Told him what was going on. He told me I am running against the governors. He said the governors on this engine are set about 250 rpm below max rpm in neutral. If that's the case it just has too little pitch on the props. Sounds good anyway. Unfortunately the only was to test it is to get a couple of 30 33 props. $9000 a little more Han I wanted to spend. I'll keep looking for a test pair and post he results if I find any.

    Do you use the trim tabs? Those Carvers always run very bow high and you have to almost always put the tabs all of the way down to get the additional speed out of them. I usually see most carvers of that era cruise 16-17 knots with no tabs and putting the trim tabs all of the way down will bring the speed up to 20-21 knots.

    Chances are, the boat would not perform once loaded with fuel/water and owners weight with the origional factory setup. It's a lot of expense to change out the gears and the only reason they did that was because they HAD to. Given the .47 reduction change and lower pitch change on the props at the same time, the boat had performance problems and will never see the origional factory test figures again and chances are you can slash 5 mph off of those origional figures given the factories reduction/pitch change.

    Why are the governers set 250 rpm's below rated rpm, and why didn't the tech reset them to factory specs? You can have your existing props re-pitched for a few more inches of pitch most likely. But you want to get a true RPM reading and make sure re-pitching them and you'll still get top RPM's at WOT.

    You going to pull her out for winter? My guess is that the hull is water logged. If you do pull her out weigh her, then weigh her prior to putting her back in. I only say this because a friend of mine bought a 58 or 60 Hatteras SF and I rode in the boat when they moved it to their slip. The boat would not get on plane even with tabs. He never had the boat surveyed prior to buying it.(Moron) I insisted the boat to be hauled upon her arrival at her new home. After the boat was pulled and weighed, she was 4,800 pounds overweight. Turns out there was a small ding in the bottom which let water into the laminate. The boat was on the hard for 7 months until she dried out, then had two layer of epoxy, followed by bottom paint...problem solved.

    Thanks for all the great responses. I did have her pulled last year and had to bottom Epoxied. The bottom was dry and it had no blisters. When I first started this article the trim tabs didn't work. I have since then fixed them and I did pick up 2 to 3 mph. You are correct Capt. Jay it made a big difference. She still only does about 23 which is slower than other Carver owners that I talk to but that's ok. I can live with that.
