In Korea there's a captain who seems contrite and taking responsibility despite the blame probably belonging further up the food chain. In Italy there's a captain who was completely to blame and a coward to boot. I'd like to see justice for the victims, and I don't see it happening in Italy. What I see is a message being sent that a CYA stratergy is the way to go rather than standing up like a man. When I was a kid there was a WW II joke about the Italian army issuing sneakers instad of guns to their soldiers. This brings merrit to that. It brings shame to all Italians.

As an adult, you should feel shame for your post.

The shame belongs to the captain and those who've failed to prosecute him.
The sentence handed the 68 y.o. Korean captain amounts to a life sentence. Not sure how I feel about that. The loss of life was horrific, but I'm not sure all the blame lies with he and his crew. What happened after the capsize yes, but the cause of the capsize? At least he was contrite, unlike the captain of the Costa Concordia.

What are you suggesting there Ed? Should the coliseum should be re activated and put to use on the general population to cleanse their shame or what?

Justice delayed is justice denied. How long a delay is acceptable, or do you think that captain should not be held liable? He thinks he's a hero. You seem to agree with him.

That was completely unnecessary as part of the discussion and as he said, I would be ashamed if I'd made that comment.

Now as to the Korean incident, yes the government was very quick to make the crew the target and find their scapegoat while letting the owners and executives float by in spite of their practice of loading that led to the accident and quickly diverted attention away from the government and their lack of proper regulation over the rebuild and over the loading and licensing of vessels. Instant Justice is not always right justice or complete justice.

Frankly, I'm not sure steps have been taken in either circumstance to keep similar incidents from happening again. Yes, the Captains deserve blame, especially in their handling post accident. But the owners have accountability too as do the governments. Carnival also came out with what amounted to a slap on the wrist and nothing that makes me feel they're operating safer today than they were then. I would also bet you're still seeing poorly loaded and overloaded cargo in ferries in Korea.

I'll be ashamed as soon as the Italian courts are. Oops! Already too late. I didn't write the jokes. I stated a fact. They exist. Don't like it? TDB. Complain to the authors. As long as nobody speaks up the Italian courts consider it just fine to let that coward walk the streets and escape justice. Meanwhile the victims families are left without closure. So if you want to stand up for and defend that captain and the Italian's justice system go for it. My sympathies lie with the victims.

By his logic if you don't make up the joke, but just repeat it, then it doesn't matter how offensive it is or to how many people, since you're simply stating it's existence as a fact. That's the closest I can come to translating his logic.

I also translate his post to mean that since OJ Simpson was cleared in a US court, all Americans should then feel shame and following K1W1, then we need to build a large facility to take us all and cleanse us. I've got it. The Great Salt Lake.

I've been been mulling something over for awhile now that should please certain members of YF. I'm not thrilled with the new YF format (probably just a matter of getting used to it), and I'm definitely not pleased with some of the members who seem to be intent on starting fights. Since I'm not one to back down, and I don't want to spoil this site, I'm therefore done with YF. Carl good luck with your site.. That's meant sincerely. Wow, I'm just reading this for the first time. I've had my hands full behind the scene. I’m just now catching up from 3 weeks of trade shows (IBEX, NBAA, FLIBS), press releases, sea trials, show coverage features and follow ups on same. Not to mention website migrations, tweakin' code and trying to politely respond to the barrage of emails I get with each member mailer (some not so nice).

I have NOT read this entire thread. I just caught the last part where Ed stated he's leaving YF. Let me just say this...

We are all here because we share a passion. We are ALL entitled to our opinions. While some of you may disagree with Ed, is it really worth taking someone to task that has helped SO MANY people on this forum??? SO WHAT if he cracks an occasional joke or makes a generalization that you perceive as politically incorrect! Hell, you should banish me too!

You know what's a shame... I know most of you guys and if you all met for a drink, you'd get along like long lost brothers.
