Do any of you know of an exhaustive published list that documents the marinas and yacht services available in the United States? I am asking for a friend who would like to have a hard copy document on board with him that would provide detailed information on the marinas and service providers along the coasts. He has motored and sailed on several inland lakes, some of fairly large size, e.g. Lake George, Lake Onieda, Lake Havasu, Lake of the Ozarks. He was able to find such a guide for those bodies of water, and as he ventures more into to coastal cruising he asked me if I knew of a similar product. Since I do not, except for cruising guides, I am putting the question to the board.
There are several websites that have marina listings. A couple (Cruisers Net and Waterway Guide) that just cover the East Coast, one (Marinas) that has marinas everywhere but is very incomplete. The only place I've found that is fairly complete is Active Captain. But this is all online, not a document. Keeping Active Captain handy can be very helpful though. They generally have all the marinas. As to information, it's complete on some and limited on others, but they also have links to the marina's website. We've found it very helpful in exploring new areas.
Thank you very much Olderboater. I will pass this info on to him. I know he will use it, but I also know him and that he will continue to search for a hard copy version.
Which, if it existed, would be outdated the day he got it. There are some regional hard copies, cruising guides. They have tons of information but their marina listings are limited and not complete. Marinas change constantly it seems.
That's not entirely true. Dozier's Waterway Guide- is excellent and they are broken into regions and have them to pretty much cover the entire country and Bahamas, some of the editions off the top of my head are: Bahamas, Southern, Mid-Atlantic, Northern, Great Lakes etc. They don't cover the West Coast. www.waterwayguide.com
Very nice, I am forwarding to him now. I have been trying to convince him to join this site as well, I think that he has been lurking already. Tom, you out there?
I said they are available by region in cruiser guides. But Dozier's doesn't come close to covering all the marinas. Great guide though.
I've never seen a marina in there I'd want to stop at that wasn't covered....but it has every marina broken down into largest size vessel accomodated, power, facilities, fuel etc.
Marinas(dot)com. It's pretty hard to cover the entire country with one source. I like stuff in print. I use Maptech cruising guides. They are a good source for information but they are regional.
That is where they excel is the detail. Largest size transient boats handled, number of transient slips, and depth are so valuable.
