Easy question........Should I have my Carver 440 with Cat 3116 diesels serviced before I dry dock it for the winter (bottom paint, etc..) or wait until Spring?? I am doing the oils/filters for the engines , generator and transmissions.......Thanks.......

How far off are you from the factory maintenance schedule? After cooler inspection? clutch oil change? impeller/raw pump service, yada, yada?
And what schedule does your local rep forecast? The required intervals and the service rep's schedule may drive the better answer.

Most yards up this way do that work in the spring. I think it has more to do with launch schedules than anything else though. Come fall they have to get them out, covered and blocked fast. If nothing else your paint is fresher when she hits the water.

Do the engine stuff before. As for the bottom job, ask your yard which is best for their schedule......if it's hard paint, I would wait till spring. Ablative not as big of a deal.....but best painting it closer to launch I think....Do you even have to haul it out in winter there? I thought Seattle never got to freezing?

    Haul out

Thanks for all of your replies........I normally leave the boat in the water over the winter with our "sort of " mild winter weather. But this year it is time to paint the bottom and it's cheaper to leave it dry docked for the winter and I can get a few projects completed that way. I don't plan on using the boat over the winter so she might as well sit out !! I will keep power / heat on it while dry docked. The service I was referring to was basic oil/ filter change along with zincs and any other items that pop up. I am leaning towards getting the oils done before haul out and then wait for the paint until a week or so before I re-launch her.

Absolutely before haul. The oil builds up acids over time. If you leave it in there over winter it can pit the bearings. By changing it before you winterized you have fresh/clean Lin on the bearing easy they sit for months over the winter.

Although you're not wrong, I think it's more a case of 6 of one/ half dozen of the other. Most boats hauling for winter don't get it changed until spring, simply because the yards are too busy hauling in the fall. For the bottom paint, before launch is the best time.
