Is it necessary to have a marine grade carpet in the interior of a yacht?

It depends on how much of the outdoors you bring in, but the answer is generally no.

nope... unless you want to pay "yacht" prices! :)

i've replaced the carpet on my boat (cant' call a 53 footer a yacht...) with standard carpet (atually home depot outdoor grade carpet but it was pretty nice style...)

on the 70 footer i run, I replaced the carpet in december, using regular interor home carpet. no issues.

Most home style carpets have a jute (or similar backing) that tends to rot if it gets wet. However, you can get home style carpets that use a fiberglass backing which would be more impervious to ocassional wet feet and dripping bathing suits. Also, if you chose polypropelene carpet fibers then even better, since this material less readily absorbs spills. etc. I installed such a carpet about 3 years ago, and still looks good with lots of traffic. Many industrial grade carpets are made that way and are still cheaper (and better) than so called marine carpets.

I've always used household or commercial carpet without a problem and all the dinner boat owners I know do the same. It really just boils down to if you expect it to get wet.
