Why is it so difficult to get a car on a yacht?

Yeah, but that idea, like any other, has a lot of potential short-comings.

Car on Yacht - Go amphibious

    Why not go amphibious
    This company:
    http://www.amphijeep.biz/home.html
has made these cars for several years, based on the small suzuki 4x4.
They are now beeing build on the new Suzuki Jimny platform.
(Coil springs and permanent 4wd, ABS etc.)

All fittings and exposed parts are stainless steel or marine coated. (Wont rust so easily.)
Can be lengthened if you wish. Not fast in water, but sea capable.

Not to wory so much if your crane can not reach the pier.
Put it in the water or drive of the sunken platform

The fancy alternative would be Gibbs Technologies:
    http://www.aquada.co.uk/
More expensive, much faster in water (30-40 mph), beautiful
    Can not sink

I think it was one of the Gibbs that Richard Brandson crossed the English Channel in record time in. Kinda Mazda MX5 ish!

I have seen the Gibbs cars before online and on a TV show once before, they run about $120,000. I recall or something close to that!

I do like the 3 person cockpit though, cool way of doing it, Ever since I saw a McLaren F1 in a magazine I always wondered why more small sports cars are not set up that way.

My Elise would be awesome with a center seat flanked by 2 side seats, though I think it would have to be widened a bit as I rub shoulders as it is in the 2 seat set up, Least the 3 seat way they wouldn't have to build a right hand/left hand drive for European and US markets!

The yacht I have been looking at, Thetis, Has a garage with a lift designed to hold a car, the Gibbs would be a perfect car for that, small enough to fit, can just pull it out of the stern garage and take it to a boat ramp to get it out of the water if there is no pier to use the built in lift. I understand that is the most difficult part in having a car on board, getting it off the yacht and onto a adjoining pier that can be driven on.

This aquacar solves all that! IT is rare not to find a boat launch near by any marina either public or privately held.

Now how does one deal with the insurances/license/tag issues that were mentioned a few postings ago? I wonder if Gibbs has solved all that to make a purchase all the more inticing.

Reed Stenhouse has taken care of insurance for me in many places. I believe that you might find a local agent under AON. The available coverage will vary substantially based upon the location. Of course anything can be covered completely but the premiums might cause you to reconsider. Insuring a 1 ton truck in Mogadishu is very expensive:D

The Gibbs aquada isn't even built for sale yet! The web site mentioned it is going to be available in 3 years and that they are looking to license the technology to a builder and dealer network, but that they are not going to manufacture this car themselves! :(

Might never come into production in that case, looks like it would be a great alternative to having a car on board and ease in launch and getting it up on land, I would have given it a serious consideration, especially if we end up with Thetis being that yacht has a garage ideal to hold a car.

    Oh well....

Interesting for SUV-lovers : on the aquada site you will also find the Humdinga (5 seater!). Also notice that Dick Boon (of Vripack Naval Architects) designed a place for a car on the aft deck of his private yacht.
(the Classic 1900) I do not know whether he realised this idea.
Didn't the Feadship Cedar Sea have a garage on board (aft deck, between the tenders) for a Range Rover ??

The people that converted the Buoy Tender into the MY Bart Roberts
just added a Munson landing craft to their boat deck. In the Munson
is a small Ford SUV. Very easy to land onto a beach, or at the local
boat launching facility. It helps to have a large crane to lift the boats.
First pic is the boat deck of MY Bart Roberts during conversion. The
second pic is from Munson Boats. http://www.munsonboats.com/

    Cars, No problem

As a captain with a car on board I can say it is no problem gettiing it on or off. Our Landcruiser is stored in a garage on the swim platform. There are plenty of docks around. If you are med tied it is easy. It takes us approximately 45 minutes from anchor-dock-unload-back to anchor.
The biggest hassle is with customs/agriculture and the local police. You have to get a temporary import licence, just the same as your yacht when you arrive. Most officers don't believe you so you have to open the garage and show them.
Had no problems in NewZealand, New Caledonia, Tahiti, Canada, Europe, South America. Australia agriculturewanted $5000 to clean the car before they would allow it ashore.
Generally you have to purchase insurance in the country if you want to use it.
Ultimately it is much cheaper to hire a car most places you go, but its just not the same.
Heres a photo of our Landcruiser on Rangiroa Atoll.

    Octopus's car

Octopus has a G-Wagon on board that can be seen (just barely) inside the garage

The thing with Octopus is that you actually need a car to travel around the yacht itself because it's so darn HUGE !

While Octopus has the wagon and is very large and wounderful. Why have the car at all? Rent local travel or as I am partial to and working on, the Helicoptor.

But then I like my water toys and even the helicoptor would be anphibian. An Anphib car would be my pick if i was bringing a car ;)

    Hi,

I would hazard a guess that the vehicle shown in Post 36 is the same as the one shown above in Malta.
