    I am looking at a Carver with Cummins 370HP @ 920hrs.
No idea on 'maintenance records' at this point.
Some oil drips on diaper under engines.

Of course, will have surveys (including a diesel survey). No matter what, I will change oil, filters, zincs, hoses, impellers, flush/clean heat exchangers, and.... so I will have a 'base line' of what has been completed and when.

Question(s): Is this an engine (incl the HP) which should last 3,000-5,000 hrs with proper maintenance? What 'other' regular 'maintenance' should I consider?
    'Pros/Cons"?

Then, I am also looking at another boat with 3208 CAT 425hp. I haven't heard many 'positive' things about this motor with 425hp. What are the 'pro'/'cons' with this engine?

The cummins is a great engine. With proper maintenance it should easily go 3 to 5 k if not more. 370 is a good size for that boat. I've had 2 carvers with cummins, 250's and now 450's. I have been thrilled with both of them. I can't speak for the cats but I do know we had some at work and didn't have very good luck with them. The mechanic you hire for the survey would know more but you can be sure the cummins are your best bet.

Thank you Monepit for your reply [We had purchased a new 38' EC (MerCruisers/SeaCore 350) and had her originally in Aurora, IN (Ohio River) and then trucked to FL (didn't have time during that period to run her down). Kept her in 'fresh' FL waters with runs to Salt. She didn't like salt at all (we didn't have a Lift), even with SeaCore outdrives. Sold her for this new adventure].

Have tried to find (googled) the 'best' place for Cummins parts. Suggestions?

I've found that none of them like salt. My 355 spent 4 years in Pensacola before coming to ky lake. She had a lot of salt damage. The 450 has never seen salt and it shows. I can't believe I will take it to salt but it is a dream to live on a boat in Florida so I will and she will get washed daily and polished a lot.
