End result....I just ran the boat today in chilly Puget Sound.......both motors were just fine...temps 182 on the "water heater" motor and 188 on the other. ran through the whole range...mostly about 1800rpm and up to max of 2800 for about a minute or so. Total run time about an hour. I don't know if the water heater is much of a theory but it is what it is !! Thanks again for all of the input. It sure helps for a pseudo mechanic like myself !!

    Hi,

Pleased to read it all ran ok.

You have a great source of cooling there with the cold water that gets pumped through the coolers so enjoy it while you can.

Regardless of extra cooling/extra heat exchanger duty from a water heater, the thermostats will control the temperature of the engine.
Time to run a cross-jumper between the sending units & gages. Find the error in your reported temp readings. A smart water heater installation will include shut off valves. Close them to prove/dis-prove my point.
You may require new thermostats in both engines.

6F is a pretty normal differential range for electric water temperature gauges at the helm IMO. It could just be a difference in the gauges or sender.

Yes, I was just trying to prove that and help resolve where the error was. I also think thermostats could cause a small error like this.
All of witch is no reason for an alarm as the post started.
Are we missing something or was this the error?

His first post was that he worried that one engine was running a lot hotter at idle, tied up to the dock, than the other one. But neither engine was close to overheating or above cruise speed/normal operating temp. It could be 1 thermostat is opening a little higher than spec. It could be the engine that blew off the expansion tank has new coolant (maybe more concentrated than the other motor), or a slight variance in the gauges/senders. Probably a combination of all 3. But he ran it at cruise and all seems ok.

Thanks again to all of you for taking the time to post advice / comments to my concern. I'll check the plumbing for the hot water heater and see if there is a shutoff valve......it would make sense !! As a side note it is a great resource to have all of the inputs from you mariners !! I wish you all a great holiday and happy boating !!
