If you want to pay top dollar look at Yacht Haven Grand. Then there is Crown Bay also in the Charlotte Amalie area.

Otherwise check out American Yacht Harbour in Red Hook. You could stay there the cheapest I would think and then move to say YHG when you have guests if they want something a bit more up scale and downtown.

As stated, if you have the ability, Yacht Haven Grande is the place to stay. If your owners are concerned for crew safety, this is your best bet. Lots to do with out leaving the compound, and good shopping is an easy walk during the day. That being said it is not cheap.
Crown Bay is a lot more economical, but not in the best part of town, OK during the day, but I would not leave the gate at night unless I was in a taxi. They have one bar on property that can get old after a while.
Red Hook is not bad, but everything is centered around Charlotte Amalie. Many boats stay else where and go to YHG the night before for pick up and drop off. YHG is getting busier and busier every year, so that might get tough to do in the future.
Another altenative is to stay over in Tortola which can be much cheaper as well, check out Nanny Cay, nice marina with a good village vibe to it. With your towed tender this a lot to do from there.
I am getting ready for my 7th winter at YHG, but if we have a long break will head up to Virgin Gorda's North Sound and stay at YCCS Marina for a while.

That really all depends on what kind of boat you are looking to dock! Could you tell us more about her?

I have way more fun at Red Hook. They have some of the islands best places to eat, great bars, and a great food market. It is also very easy to get to some of the best parts of the island.

I had a boat docked at Crowne Bay Marina. It is extremely dirty from the powerplant right around the corner. Yacht Haven Grande if you can swing it. I never felt unsafe at Crowne Bay (inside the marina), and they have a ships store, good little grocery store, and the restaurant is pretty decent and the staff are nice. If you need to leave the boat Crowne Bay requires a local Captain to watch the boat. One of my buddies is down there....Frank Griffon, he has lived on St. Thomas for decades and has been a Captain for decades as well as owning About Time Charters (SF charters)......

    Agree w/ Capt J...

Crown Bay is VERY dirty...directly under the flight path of the airport as the planes take off just overhead.

However, the ship's store is very handy and the grocery (Gourmet Gallery) has lots.

We've spent lots of time there and always walked back/forth to the french quarter w/ out any hassle (LONG walk). The one bar gets tired quick but it is local and not at all pretentious.

Yacht Haven Grand is a bit overblown - great dockage but if you're not into shopping jewelry that's about it. Easy walk to the mall.

Red Hook is way out from the airport/town - a good hour if you're taking the dollar taxi as the road is always jammed. However, for your boat you might find it cheaper and a lot more easy going. Also, if you're departing to the BVIs, you're way closer than Charlotte Amalie but the hour's ride from the airport would definitely be off putting to an owner. Good place to hole up b/t trips, though.

Definitely good idea to hang out BVI b/t trips (aside from the hassle of clearing in/out). Nanny Cay a great protected spot. Better yet, if you don't mind some time on the generator, lots of boats hang out Little Harbor, Peter Island stern to protected in 95% of weather. With the tender you can be Road Town in less than 10 minutes and Nanny Cay in less than that.

    It's a 85' Pacific Mariner I believe.

And I agree Red Hook is a fun place to hang out. Also a quick trip away from St. John.

I really do prefer Red Hook! At this point we can fit in. And at 85' you would most likely be on one of the front T docks. And I love to take the ferry over to St. John and hang out (if you don't feel like getting all un done).

And why would you pay to keep an 85 foot boat down town? That really does not seem smart.

Another marina in the BVI is Soper's Hole. The place is clean, good security, and has lots of supply shops.
