This is my new Blackshark III fuselage that I will use for FAI/F3C competition. Mechanics are an Align T-Rex 700E V2. Hoping to have it built before the end of the month, but I've got some sea trials coming up over the next couple of weeks, leaving me little time tinker...

Just got the truck packed and I'm ready to head up the coast. Now if anyone wants to complain about this thread - or specifically - my interest in rc helis is not keeping in context with the subject of this website, please note the truck bed bird perch is made from white Starboard and the landing skid clips are a Perko product for holding a marine antenna.

As far as I know this was the first use of "hobby-grade" RCs in sports in North America... November 2010. A couple of weeks ago there was a big deal about VW using a drone to film their WRC cars in MC and Sweden and how that was going to be the next big thing in rally video production.... nice, and yeah, their's is high-tech stuff... but we did it in Canada first.

After a maiden flight at 70%, I cranked up the power to 85% on the new BlackShark. Using Align V-2 mechanics with a lowered DFC head and an 800MX motor, it was clocked at 123 mph on radar. It will probably crack 135 mph with a little more tuning and a few more passes. Headed out to the field this morning. Tom Serio is suppose to come out with his camera. For those that don't know, his real job is heading up Disaster Management for a major wireless provider. I'm hoping he won't be covering the same today...

I'll leave this one for Carl to look at, he may enjoy it.

I'm not a Smack fan, but I appreciate the skill. I can do most of the maneuvers, but my flights are more fluid and less violent. I'm an old FAI guy, where precision aerobatics scored points. Today's 'sim-kids' are all about frantic flight that is dangerously close to decapitation. It's exciting at first, but it gets annoying; like a rabid mosquito. Maybe I'm just getting old...

I saw this video on youtube: Corsica River - YouTube Notes say it was shot using a DJI Phantom with a GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition camera. I Googled that and found that I can purchase a similar set up for under $1,000. I think it would be great fun and very cool to do videos like this to add to our yacht for sale specs on the net. here is the question: How tough is it to learn how to fly this copter, and how much practice does it take to be good at it? Can your garden variety, idiot yacht broker (me) with reasonable hand/eye coordination learn to do this?

They just released the DJI phantom 2 vision with inbuild camera so you don't need a gopro camera setup anymore.

Sorry Eric. I saw your post a few days ago but got sidetracked.

All of the multi-rotor craft are inherently stable due to software, but they still require some skill to fly. Before you put $1k at risk, best to buy a simulator like Real Flight 6.5 or newer. Then, I would buy one of the new Blade Nanos to learn orientation and forward flight. They're only $69, but you will need a transmitter. You will need it for your DJI Phantom or any other model. A basic transmitter will suffice for quads, but sometimes the software interface with basic TX's can be challenging. Personally, I would spend the extra money for an upper end JR or Spektrum radio. I'm not a Futaba fan. I use a JR 11X 2.4. Internet mail order price around $600.

Since my original post, I've done some reading on the net. There is a forum for DJI pilots that has answered many questions. I may just go for it. It's not like I haven't previously wasted a grand (or much more) on stupid stuff. This may turn out OK.
