Those people who have spoken in a language other than their native tongue
are well aware that direct word for word translation from any language to another is a fiction, irrespective of the original speaker's language.

    Grow up.

Would the Italian Judge and the all Italian Jury be reading it in English?

Thanks god, I have not been in trial in Italy jet :). But this trial must be multi langual (simultaneous translation or whatever). How do you guys do that in Canada or Switzerland (they have 4 official languages, Canada 2). In Germany, the procedual setup of a trail will assure the proper understanding of all participants. Many of the witnesses and most of the joint plaintiffs are non Italian. Crewmembers and passengers came from all over the world. As far as I know, there are also American citizens involved. Their lawyers at least, will ensure the correct translation into the Englisch language. The translater boxes will probably look like a meeting of the United Nations.

Thats Ok, here in Guernsey we hold much of the Law in 13th Century Early French that is only understood by 100 people on Earth.

In Antigua, low courts are given and heard in the Dialect local language. This is great, except that most of the Police are imported and don't understand a word the locals say.

    Island Creole or Dialect

The Law is an Ass...or a Donkey... or even a Burro.....depending on where you're from.

If we were to say the script isn't a precise translation, would paraphrasing be considered sufficient enough for us to get the gist? If not verbatim, at least of the mindset, actions, and intentions of the primary person in charge of the entire ship and its passengers?

    Hi,

Could I politely suggest that you follow some of your own advice and grind your linguist axe elsewhere.

Maybe your distant relative would fare better with some spiritual support instead.

Has anybody here heard the actual recordings? Since English is a fairly universal language, especially in radio communications on the sea, I'm wondering if they were in fact communicating in Italian, English or what.

    In Italian.
The Telegraph released the recording back in January 2012.

As for the quality of translations... Yes, it varies. That's the reason why certified translations exist. And if thats not enough there are also publicly appointed and sworn translators. (Or the equivalent thereof.)

The ships language of all Costa ships is Englisch and to some extend Italian. Except for one French captain, all commanders of Costa cruise ships are of Italian nationallity but on duty, Englisch is used for orders and challenge and response (IMO/SOLAS rules with international crew, as it is with RTs with the outside world). To my knowledge, the RT was held in Italian language. The orginal sound of this RT was in the media in Italy.

And rgsuspsa, just by changing a few words in the translation, its endings or the composition of a sentence, you will not be able to change this coward from guilty to non guilty or vice versa. Fact is, this man was among the first people, who left the ship, when he called abandon ship. This is what this RT is all about. A coast guard commander in charge of the rescue operation, trying to get this coward of a captain back on his ship, to assist (or even lead) the rescue of innocent people.

Except for this fire on a ferry in the red sea, where the crew (including all officers) abandoned the burning ship with the first life boat and leaving the passengers behind, the Costa Concordia tragedy, is the most awfull example of bad seamanship, I have seen. I do not mean the cause of the accident, I do mean the behavior of people in charge on board after the accident.

Capt Coward in trial (his nickname in the European media)

The trial against Schettino and 5 other people in charge during the accident will start most likely on Tuesday in a theater in the town of Grosseto, Italy. More than 400 witnesses and 250 joint plaintiffs will paricipate in the trial. The attorney general will focus the trial on Schettino as the sole responsible person for the tragedy. The 5 other will get a deal by paying a fine like the shipping company.

Schettino gave an interview, stating that he has good conscience, because he did not make any mistakes. His lawyers will play "not guilty" and are trying to prove, it was the fault of the shipping company and the bad material and construction of the ship .

I said the trial will start most likely, because the lawyers in Italy are on strike at the moment. What a wonder, its summer in Italy :).

Seems to have had a hic-up. Something about some fouled cables. Can anybody translate?

    Hi,

Found this on the website, above French and Italian versions.

Titan Micoperi announced that strandjack operations were suspended for 1h for maintenance work. #Parbuckling operations have now resumed.

Parbuckling is complete. Costa Concordia is now horizontal on the platform built on the sea bed to support it. Pretty cool. Didn't watch it all day but checked in on it during the day.
