Still wondering - imagining the wake on this at 30+ knots with 94,000 hp applied.
Got to be 8m/26ft. or so... ???

Can you imagine wake boarding or water skiing behind... scary!

    "The Wake of Azzam"

I do not believe, that the wake of Azzam will be so dramatic. If you look at the pictures of her, sitting in the dry dock, she does not have a classical displacement hull.

You see a special designed high speed bulbous bow, followed by a very long and sleek forward hull, relatively shallow draft flat bottom mid hull and at the aft part an adapted planning hull with low deadrise and contured S-type tear-off edge. And it does not have props and normal rudder.

It would be interesting to find out, whether these Lips 9000 Jets are made to be counterrotating. (2 to the left and 2 to the right ????)

Therefore she will not have the typical wake picture of a destroyer with big white mustache at the bow and large wake at the stern.

If you look at the picture of the stern wake of this large Mangusta during sea trials at 35+ Kts, the stern wake of Azzam will be very similar, also she has 4 Jets.

With the bow wave of Azzam, we will see the quality of the NA and tank testing of Lürssen. But for this subject, I have great confidence in their ability.

I am sure Azzam will leave a long, straight, white and foaming wake of "boiling" water behind, but for doing that, she will need enough water under her keel. That is probably one reason for her additional slow speed propulsion system.

Gentleman, you can not change my mind, Azzam is a gorgeous ship.

You are probably right on the wake... with that very shallow and gradual flat slope from what appears just after midship to stern.

But your post got me to thinking... :

The California class DLGNs were capable of very similar speed.
    Length 181.6 m / 596 ft.; 18.2-.5 beam / 60-61 ft and gross around 11,000 ton.
Two D2G reactors rated 150 MW at 100%
The main turbines were rated at 35,000 hp 2x35,000=70,000 hp noting the ship was rated at 117% at 32 knots 41,000 hp x 2 = 82,000 hp... continuous operation.
100% reactor power on one reactor driving both steam plants =28 knots continuous.
Max speed 35 knots... per Janes Fighting Ships (true).
Displacement hull shape... and ventilated props to simulate carrier sound signature... meaning less efficient than it could be.

Azzam 180m and 94,000 hp with a high speed hull form and water jet propulsion.

Ok, this is my question how much faster will Azzam really be and considering the scary wake behind a California Class DLNG at 32knots... but is theoretical hull speed (displacement was around 32 knots).

This is what I am thinking....I am wondering what real difference with more hp and better hull form and better propulsion efficiency be... of course we don't know yet the full specs of Azzam... but it will be rather upsetting that despite the more hp, likely lower mass, better hull form, and water jets... lower wake... it may not be faster!

    Update on Lürssen and Azzam

My son and his wife had family day today in the Bremen area. Just to please his old man, he did a stop at the Weser River and took some pictures, which might be of some interest to the members.

Just some random shots of Azzam and some more detailed pictures of her. I believe on those detailed shots of the exhaust area, you can see the air intakes on the bridge deck, just aft of her covered name. To bad the pictures are downsized to 640x480. On the highres pictures, you can see the very high quality of her faired hull. On the bow, behind the anker pocket, you might be able to see the reflections of the waves on her hull. Remember, this is a 180 meter hull !!! How many man hours went in that fairing and polishing. On the detailed shot of her stern, the LIPS 9000 waterjets are clearly visible. Amazing how perfect she sits already on her waterline.

Behind Azzam, a large floating crane was preparing to load or unload two large hull segments to or from a barge. Maybe there is a new "Bigboy" in the pipeline at Lürssen?

At the Lürssen pier on the opposite river bank, Shergar could be seen, repair and refit???

Copyright of all pictures goes to Yachtforums. If YF wants more pictures, PM me. Highres are also available. Due to YF limit, pictures will be on more than one post.

Why need owners from this specific part of the world so many antennas on their ships? I know why multiple antennas are sometimes usefull, but so many? It is well kown that many of the Med design, fast yachts have dummies on their radar arches for symmetrical look, but not on those big boys?

Both pictures were taken with my camera.

    Hi,

The larger ones will probably be TV Antennas for the most part. If you want un interrupted viewing when the vessel moves around you need two units for each satellite, if you want to pull streams off more than one satellite you need another pair for each satellite you want to see.

The smaller ones for the most part will be comms, same rules apply but also who only has one or two phone lines at the palace?

    Great video!!!

I must admit she looks cool.

That is great stuff. She is still conducting sea trials in the North Sea but was just doing some cruising with up to 15.7 knots so far...

Man from some angles her design looks unbalanced... the only thing I really like on her is her gorgeous propulsion package. That is a pitty as she is the biggest yacht of the world.

From the front quarter angle the wedding cake effect is very apparent but other angles she looks cool. I like when they zoomed in for the passing details, very nice and remember she is not completed yet! If she is moving slowly and those waterjets are kicking like that I can imagine what high 20-knots will look like.

Today Marinetraffic.com tracked her at a top speed of 17.7 knots!

So far all the pics and vids I have seen of her show that she is engaging only the two outer drives so when the other two kick in perhaps we will see her higher speeds?

I do not understand the use of water jets on a boat of this size. Would that not make her very hard to dock?

In the youtube link listed above it looks like she is pushing out quit a bit of water at that speed. I wonder how loud it will be when they really open her up!

Would be very nice if someone could make a close up video of her passing by at >25 knots. But that's easier said than done alas :)
Such videos of large yachts are very scarce.

From what I have heart, they are not using the GTs jet. Do not worry, there are some cameras on stby. The first full blows will be in the media.

And the booster jets are not that noisy, as you might think. These are not airplane jets. The medium going through is more dense and much slower than on an aircraft jet engine. And the engine noise on the exhaust stacks is even lower. If you are not on the top deck, you probably wont hear it at all. The research on noise reduction, was most likely a big part of the development phase. This is a yacht, not a warship.

But look at the very small bow wave on the 15 to 17 Kts pictures. Thats what I call great naval architecture and tank testing.

I am looking forward to those high speed pictures and YTs.
