How to evaluate electronics?

    Hi,
    New to boating and looking for a cockpit motor yacht as a live aboard.
    I think we want an Ocean Alexander in the 44 to 48 foot range. Anyone got an opinion about these boats?
    Also, during our search, we have become increasingly more confused about navigation and radar equipment and we are looking for a good source of information.

    As far as electronics are concerned, if they're more than 3 years old they should hold no value in your negotiations. You may get several more years out of them, but they're yesterday's stuff. No vakue. When choosing electronics you want them big enough that they're easy to read and user friendly. Two of the better names are Garmin and Furuno. Personally I prefer Garmin chartplotters and Furuno radars. One move the industry has been making lately is to touch screens. I don't like them on smaller boats. Too hard to be accurate when you're bouncing around.

    As for Ocean Alexanders, go to the search feature above and put in the name. I'm sure they've been written about several times here.

    Also, if you're considering 44' to 48' go for the 48 or else you'll probably be shopping for one within 3 years with another broker's fee.

    Thanks for the quick response. As far as the electronics goes, I was kinda thinking along those lines. Thank you for confirming it.
    As far as opinions go regarding OA's go, I've asked already and received a deafening silence in response!! Apparently, nobody knows anything about the ones I'm interested in.

    I just took a quick look back through our search feature, and there seems to be very little info and mostly about the larger ones. Let me suggest you send a PM to JWY (Judy). She probably knows the trawler community better than most here and could give you a valid opinion.

    Hi,

    I would second NYCAP's thoughts on Electronics.

    Basically once you see something installed in a yacht it is either very close to being the old model or is the old model.

    On the bigger ones we have to specify and agree for a lot of the gear 3 yrs in advance of launch, it is very had to get a yard to agree to fit something that no one really knows will exist.
