We on YF seem to be a well traveled lot. This game is sure to lose you a few hours of your life! GeoGuessr - Let's explore the world!
I think you just singlehandedly dropped the productivity of YachtForum members by 50%!! I'm addicted... first try: Game finished! You got 17856 points in total
It's amazing how terrain is so closely associated with geography. I did better than expected. I also feel like I've just returned from a trip around the world. Thanks for the tour-de-force Fish!
Absolutely... problem is half the signs are in languages I can't read! I liken this to "being kidnapped, drugged, and dropped off". The fun is exploring the area and sluicing the clues together... I seem to do great until I'm in the former USSR regions... then I generally guess a good 1000 kms off target... Not many of the spots are coastal, although I did just get dropped in Cabo!
Yeah a great game...and suddenly geography makes fun! But somehow 90 % of it are in the USA, Sweden, Australia, Russia and Japan... At least when I am playing.
Seems pretty random to me... have gotten spots all around Europe, central America, USA & Canada. Nothing in Asia yet, though since China hasn't likely been filmed for Street View that's not surprising. So how far are you all scanning along before making a guess? I've managed to score 9000-10000 with only rotating the camera, not moving along the streets to look further than what's initially presented. Those completely random "middle of nowhere" roads without a single identifying mark are tough to guess.
I've was basically figuring anything was fair game, including following roads until I could find an intersection with signage, then using another window with google to zero in, and scoring in the 16-23K range, often getting my location to within a kilometer. But I tried the "no moving allowed" method and really find it interesting... besides the geography hints, I find myself looking at the vegetation and using that to rule out certain latitudes... the road width and any vehicles in sight which sometimes helps with general continents.... signage, if visible (30 mph means your in the US!), "profiling" the people visible... architectural clues (that got me into the Netherlands once...) and so on. I'm rather astounded at how much one can tell... in 3 sessions I never got the wrong continent, and sometimes came within a couple hundred kms, scored 9-11K. Update: Posted this then played another session and was totally off on 2 (wrong continents)... as they say "pride goeth before the fall"!
Where's my passport... I need to travel more...9400. I will share the link with my grand-kids. Thanks Fish...
