Easy question : How much should a diesel furnace smoke when first starting ?? When I use mine on my 1994 440 it bellows quite a bit of black smoke for about 45 seconds then is clean.........NORMAL ?? I recently replace filters .....Thanks

I think that 45 seconds of black smoke on start up of a diesel furnace is too much.

I would change filter, nozzle, clean burner, inspect flu, and adjust air intake as appropriate.

I puff of smoke when they first light off is ok,

call the customer service to confirm.

If it's an Espar, then it probably needs a new combustion screen. It's a very fine mesh tubular screen around the glow plug. The symptoms are smoke at start-up and reduced heat output.
