Collision vs. Allision

    The US Coast Guard is investigating the allision of a 752' tanker with the San Francisco Bay bridge. Back in Nov. 2007 when the Cosco Busan, a 810' container ship, hit the San Francisco-Oakland Bay bridge, the USCG investigated the collision.

    Hmm, someone has since learned maritime legal terminology ...or maybe it's a San Fran thing.

    Allision - the act of striking or collision of a moving vessel agaisnt a stationary object.

    Collision - the striking of a moving vessel with another vessel.
