Merry Christmas to all and to all, may you awake to a sock without coal. :D

    Why?

Because Santa knows who has been naughty and who has been nice.

Having a Sulfur Crested, White Cockatoo Christmas with my friend Nancy and her seriously special parrot Ally, who has her own dedicated website... www.PrettyCockatoo.com

This pic was taken at the Orlando Helicopter Blowout two weeks ago. Ally was our mascot. Even with her wings clipped, she still flies better than me! Big learning curve after an 8 year hiatus, but my 3D skills are slowly returning. Saw lots of old friends I competed with in the 80’s and 90’s. They’re all old now! I’m still in denial.

Spending the holidays at the local flying field and the eves on the simulator. Hope you guys are doing something fun too!

    Happy Holidays to all!

    Merry Christmas To All.
Thanks for another great year of good reading on YF.
Carl, as your friend loves birds, here is my best buddy Jasper, had him about 10 years now and my wife spoon fed him.
For a while I used to Free Fly him, which means I would walk the dog in the park and Jasper would fly free and follow us in his own time. I don't believe in cutting wings etc. Unfortunately this had to come to an end when a territorial Brown Falcon, about a quarter Jaspers size, tried to kill him by dive bombing him. He survived by breaking his fall by crashing into a tree.
These birds make the best friends, just need to be owned by people who know that they are not a short term ornament, as your friend knows. Good to see such a bond.
    Have great year Carl.

I pray that everyone on the forum had a wonderful holiday, and that all are healthy. Let us all pray that, as we enter the New Year, we can end the divisiveness, radicalism and hatred that has marked this past decade. Let us pray for prosperity for all, and especially that we can find an end to this new wave of senseless violence and mass-murder of innocents that seems to be taking hold.

    Thanks Mate!
He is a very healthy and spoilt member of the family. He does a lot more tricks, just for fun. I might make another video sometime.
Stay safe K1W1, and have a Happy 2013.

Jasper rocks! And apparently rolls too!!
Ally's wings are 'naturally' clipped. As you know, these birds often have neurotic behaviors that can include plucking. Ally plucks her yellow feathers of flight.
So true! Nancy has given her 15 years of love & patience, but the most impressive aspect of this commitment is the fact that Nancy is seriously allergic to the powder given off by these birds. She is unable to breathe in close proximity to Ally. Over the past few months, Nancy has allowed me to babysit Ally. She's great company while I'm working!

15 years is commitment, especially if you are allergic to the powder which is the birds own way of protecting itself from some infections. Cockatoos have a lot of this so Nancy must be very in love. There was a Sulphur Crested in London Zoo that lived to 120 years!
Macaws and Cockatoos commonly make 80 or 100 years, so my younger son has already put his hand up!
I have a feeling your Cockatoo maybe from Sulawesi or another Indonesian Island, just by the size and colours. The feather pluck is all too common, especially with African Greys, which I had a few of in Africa, we lived in Northern Rhodesia now Zambia, hence the “Kafue” which was a magnificent game reserve where we fished and camped. I kid you not, we used to run our boat through the hippos and the crocs would be on the shore. Now it is all developed from what I hear.
Say HI! to both Nancy and Ally!
    All the best.
    George

    Jasper is a cool bird.
My friend had a bird similar to Ally.
    Very ornery, that bird was.

Sounds as if a couple of ex-lax tablets in the bird's food would have made it sound like a machine gun, expelling the buttons.

Years ago I found a cockatiel on the side of the road. I saved him so the coons and cats wouldn't get him. When I picked it up he latched onto my hand between thumb and forefinger. Wow can those things bite. I should have known that he was on the side of the road because someone put his feathered butt there. I kept him for about 3 months. The whole time he screamed to a mocking bird outside the window and the mocking bird screamed back. My office was in the house at that time and I was with him 24/7. I nearly lost my mind. My wife had a cousin with totally loud and obnoxious kids. We figured he'd fit right in and gave him to her. He lasted 4 months there and she had to get rid of him. She found a bird lady with an aviary. DK what happened to him from there, but I suspect he eventually got his name changed to lunch. No more indoor birds for me. My wife has about 10 feeders outside and we have a huge variety of birds in our yard. They come. They go. I like it that way.:)

He didn't eat them he just clipped them from my shirt and they went flying around the room !!

He also did not last because, as NYCAP explained, he would scream so loud it would make you think you were going to burst an eardrum.

My friend had had other birds and took this one, nursed it to health and also had to let him go.

I love those birds but my variuos friends experineces and my lifestyle would not suit a bird. It would be unfair to the thing.

A cat in the office is enough and cat and a bird, while it might be entertaining for a while, would ultimately reap bloodshed......

    I'd rather visit with one.

    Merry christmas from the north

Welland Canal closes for another year December 31/12. The following day they will start to drain the water from the canal which will take five days.
Today we only have six inches of snow and boats are moving very slow.
    HAPPY NEW YEAR.
