Look at the pictures of the yacht in the article, it must be 35 meters, not feet.

Ummmm, no, he told his captain and crew to help. And if he hadn't I suspect the captain would have told him, "you have to". Although it looked the people on the sinking boat would have only had a short swim to land. Nice looking girlfriend though.

The Captain said that three big waves from behind, filled the open scooter-garage and had the boat to go down like this.

I have been waiting for this to happen on most boats with low positioned garages of all kinds...

Would a bilge pump in the aft solve that problem? I guess it is not such a problem with lateral tender hatches as the water can fload of, right?

I can only assume BIG bilge pumps are not a priority in such boats....?

(I honestly don't know but if the scooter garage scooped up 1000 gallons, or almost 4000 liters of water, the on board pumps would not keep up and the boat would sink...?)

I ripped out all pumps and plumbing / wiring on my own boat and started from scratch with new pumps and auto switches at different levels and with BIG red lights in the cockpit that illuminates every time a pump runs and would expect nothing less on a multimillion dollar yacht even if it is a pimp-mobile...

So Lars: Is this kind of boat exempt from standards written by Veritas and similar agencies specifying emergency equipment to meet sea worthiness?
Or could this incident be failure of installed equipment?

Usually incidents like this is because the crew leaves an internal passage open. Often leading to the engineroom... In this case I have no idea why so much water could remain inside.

Even so, surely a big yacht has automatic bilge pumps just like a small yacht, or a least a high water alarm.....?

Yes, but if you suddenly is having lots of water coming in somewhere, the boat can lean over and perhaps get additional water from air intakes, portholes or what have you. Then your genset stops and the chief is out playing with the tenders...

    Yup, understood and agreed.

I also understand we will never see any of these boat anywhere close to blue water or rough weather if they can sink on their own just sitting at anchor.

My next yacht will be one of them crab fishing boats from the TV show Deadliest Catch: They could probably handle the rough duty of being anchored of the beach in Saint-Tropez without sinking when a bikini girl waked it with her jet ski. :D

that's how a large Azimut sank that was being towed up the New River stern first a year or two ago.....They had the stern door open and a few good waves and down she went.......I think she sank right before getting to Rolly's or at Rolly's.....
