About a week ago, maybe longer, there was a thread that had a photo of a Nordhavn 47 (?) in rough seas. I think the thread was about stability and/or catamarans vs. monohulls. Can anyone direct me back to that thread and photo? Okay, I admit I'm not a big fan of Nordhavns but have a dear friend who thinks they are great...but having never gone offshore (with his timid wife) and he still feels that they are "bullet proof" with stabilizers and easy motion, come what may. That one photo could change his/her mind. Sorry, Nordhavn...great boats in many respects, but like an SUV to just to go down the street to the grocery store...errrr..not a good choice for my friend who will only "coastal cruise" in all but perfect weather. Any help out there? Thanks, Richard.
Not sure which photo you mean; there are many showing Nordhavn in heavy seas; but not many of their competitors; I`ll let you and your friend decide the reasons for this. Personally I think you are doing your friend a disservice with this type of advice to his partner, it may put her off yachting altogether. Let your friend decide what's right for himself rather than influence him with your own dreams of a perfect boat. You normally retain a friendship longer that way. Paul
Sounds like your friend knows more of the perils of small boats in big seas than you do ... your SUV analogy is illogical as is your entire post which is a blatant attempt to knock a brand that has a well deserved reputation for quality, performance and excellence. And no I have no connection to PAE - I read and study a lot of boats so my opinion(s) are based upon facts not supposition...
Here's a picture taken during a Nordhavn rally. They look to be very capable boats overall. I took a look at their website and their fleet looks to be very well designed to handle a wide variety of sea conditions. They also look to be very comfortable.
My favorite place for Nordhavn pictures is youtube. Check this one out: Great Siberian Sushi Run - Nordhavns running in rough seas in Japan - YouTube Then put Nordhavn in the youtube search window and you will find pages of Nordhavn videos.
that's my experience and friends of mine "only coastal cruise" ... however I'm sure many on YachtForums can tell you that only coastal cruising does not preclude the possibility of very rough seas and potential disaster when some very simple things go horribly awry ... try heading North along the coast from So Mexico all the way to Alaska ... or any portion you like ... you and your vessel better be prepared or you may well end up in a world of hurt ... But Hey - it's only coastal cruising!
Yup, or he works for the competition. There is nothing wrong with Nordhavn or their reputation. Good, sturdy and well made boats. Not a Carver and never will be...
