What an amazing performance! You have to give these guys credit for guts and fitness and you have to give their sponsor credit for recognizing a win win situation no matter how it turned out.

From a press release on a commercial maritime website:

"The oldest team to row across the Atlantic, sponsored by Chemring Marine, the world's leading marine distress signal company, took just 48 days to finish.

The Corinthians team, Elliot Dale (54), Chris Walters (52), Brian Fletcher (58) and Tony Short (67), from Dorset and Devon, has a combined age of 231 years - 54 years more than the previous oldest victors.

The Corinthians finished the 3,000-mile race from the Canaries to Barbados in 48 days, eight hours and three minutes and came in sixth place in their ocean rowing boat Spirit of Corinth.

The team says, "Well we finally made it! At about 18.45 local time, on Sunday the twenty-first of January, we took our first steps on land for forty-eight days, thus completing the challenge of rowing across the Atlantic Ocean, and breaking our own target of fifty days. This has literally been one hell of a rollercoaster ride and so very hard.

"It is so difficult to put into words how we are all feeling at this precise moment and I really don't think it will sink in for quite a while, but amidst all the conflicting emotions the feeling of gratitude stands out.

"We are so grateful to every single person who has helped us to achieve this feat, and to all the supporters around the world who have kept us going with regular messages of encouragement and support - Thank you all!"

    Yachting Tradition At Its Best

You are right on. Talisker as it turns out has quite a bit to do with "The World's Toughest Rowing Race". If you go the race's site you will find a bio on each of the 17 teams that participated in this year's event that are all quite compelling in their own right.

This meet promotes not one but several yachting traditions including volunteerism, friendship, good sportsmanship, good seamenship, competitive racing, love of yachts and the sea, and last but not least throwing a few Scotches back after the sun has crossed the yardarm. Thanks to Talisker for putting on such a great contest!

    From their website:

    RACE INFO

TALISKER Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2011: The World´s Toughest Rowing Race

In 1966 Sir Chay Blyth and John Ridgeway performed their legendary open-boat row across the Atlantic Ocean in English Rose III. The trip took 92 days and it laid the foundation for the TALISKER Whisky Atlantic Challenge of 2011.

The challenge begins on 4th of December, with 17 teams from around the world. More people have been into space than have rowed the Atlantic, and it is rightly considered as one of the toughest challenges on the planet.

Since 1997 this ocean-rowing race has attracted the brave and the intrepid to pit themselves against the elements and race the 2,900 miles from La Gomera, Tenerife, to Port St Charles, Barbados.

Rowers have to cope with blisters, salt rashes, sleep deprivation and rowing in two-hour shifts around the clock for weeks on end.

Boats are seven meters long and just under two metres wide, with only a small cabin for protection against storms. All boats are equipped at the race start, and cannot take any repair, help or food and water during the crossing.

The Atlantic Challenge is proudly supported by TALISKER Whisky, the only single malt whisky from the Isle of Skye on Scotland´s West coast. It´s a particularly appropriate partnership, given the maritime heritage of the whisky, whose distillery is directly by the sea on the banks of the Loch Harport, Carbost, Skye. Aside from its maritime associations, TALISKER has long supported great maritime challenges, as well as fantastic charities such as the RNLI in Great Britain. It is in this spirit that the brand is proud to support the TALISKER Whisky Atlantic Challenge: The World´s Toughest Rowing Race.

Well happy birthday you old fart!

I couldn't put together a team that would even think about rowing across the Atlantic. Everyone I know will hardly even fly coach much less physically contribute to the effort.

However, given enough Talisker to lubricate the prospective propulsors, who knows what might happen? I don't think you are too old but I am not sure we can muster enough horsepower to carry the cargo of spirits we would need but if you want to give it a try I'll join you.
