Crossing the Atlantic

    Hi,

    I have written about ths somewhere else on YF but can't remember where right now.

    I have done a crossing from Miami to Monaco on a motor boat that did 10kts on a good day.

    We left in the last week of July 1988 according to my Discharge Book Entry.

    We went to Nassau to collect the new Owner who although he was an American did not seem to want to be in the US again for fear of being busted for something he did in the past.

    We travelled to Bermuda, the Azores and on to Gib then Monaco. We had the Owner and guests on all the way and I would say the only thing we saw were a few flurries on the surface of the Ocean, otherwise it was absolutely dead flat and smooth. At night it was difficult to work out where the horizon actually was as the stars shone out of the Ocean just as well as they did out of the sky.

    There was a High Pressure System which I believe is called the Azores High that extended all the way from just of the US East Coast right into the Med that year.

    We were told by the Master that this was the reason we has such a perfectly smooth crossing.

    We also helped a small sailboat that was 6 weeks out of St Martin and had been becalmed for several of those. They had food and water and just needed a jump start as their battery was flat. We stopped beside them and gave them one of our Tender batteries and some jumper leads, they got their engine started and gave us the gear back, we cast them off and we both carried on our way.

    The yacht itself was capable of doing MIA - GIB return without bunkering, we just stopped all over the place so the Owner and his Guests could see these places.

    Different era, different times. Lessons learned from the Fox 4 and the F8.

    Wonder what a F-8 vs. F-14 knife fight would be..........other than speed.......the F8 and F14 have about the same turn radius at 350 kts--best cornering speed.

    Snod did one whale of a job on this pass. He spent some time "in his cabin" but well worth it. The photo made it around the fleet in about a nano second!!

    Agree regardless of the "occupation" of the doer, flying, boating, etc. etc.

    Now back to Crossing the Atlantic

    Good choice!!!!! Check out the "Gunfighters Site." Google F-8 Crusader and seach around..........great down load of a F-8 start up on the fantail of a carrier.
