Ok, here's thinking outside the box a little. It is possible to buy 4 weeks per year aboard a 2009 100' Hargrave for $500k, with fixed operating expenses of $40k/yr and "consumption-based" expenses of about $3k/wk. Speaking as one who recently followed this path, it's too soon for me to say how well it worked out -- our first block of time is in November. But I can say this much: If you only want 2 weeks per year, chartering is likely easier and cheaper. If you want more than about 10 weeks per year, full ownership is probably cheaper (but not easier). Between 2 and 10 weeks per year, fractional is at least worth considering before following another path.

There are several fractional companies out there. I went with Monocle Yachts and have been happy with how I've been treated so far, but it's early days yet.

I happen to be a big believer in the concept of fractional ownership from a financial perspective and a practical one. Just hate to see boats sitting idle and unused. But like any partnership, the devil is in the details. Right boat, right location, right partners, right schedule, right management and it needs to be treated like a business. I think friends partnering can really stress a friendship, although partnering can often create friendships.

Could you elaborate please, either by posting or private message. It is always better to know what may be coming, and I'm clearly in a position to need the information on which your opinion is based.

    Thanks

i replied to your post about Johnson in your other thread on the Johnson forum.

as much as i like Hatteras, most the 90s and up models do not have an adequate aft deck and swim platform. It comes down to where and how you use the boat, i guess for older folks up north maximizing saloon space is fine, but for a family with kids cruising the carib, bahamas and med, I can't imagine a small aft deck and swim platform.

this is where people spend the most time. On our old 53, when on the hook we're on the aft deck... We run charters on the Johnson 70 and the aft deck is where guests spend their time, rarely inside the saloon.

Most of the Hatteras' I've ever seen in that size and year range already have extensions put on making up for the lack of an aft deck/cockpit/swim platform. I've run around 100 different Hatteras MY's over the years, only 3 or 4 of them didn't have an extension put on.
